What a pity that the Swans have not done in Sydney what the Lions have in Brissy

Originally posted by footyhead No matter what the outcome tonight, but especially if the Swans go down by a long way, it is a pity that the Swans have not been able to take the mantle handed them and really excerpt themselves on the competition.
It seems that more people are turning to AFL through the Influence of the great northern team rather than the influence of the Swans.
I think that is a pity because surely the Swans are in Sydney to convert more people to Aussie Rules!?!
They can't be in Sydney to compete with the best because they never win any flags.
Maybe they are just in Sydney to make money and survive.
What ever the case maybe it is very disappointing when we consider the success of two other teams like Port and Brissy who have been in the AFL in their current forms a lot shorter time than the Swans.
Lah de dar, lah de dar, lah de dar.............
Come back when you have something usefull to say.
By the way, how did those Saints of yours go today footyhead? Or should that be bloodsports?

chris johnson thats it!
It gave them additional trade material, admittedly material that they made the most of. Barker was traded to the Hawks for Brad Scott. Molloy netted them Michael. And of course Hawking was used to trade for Sydney's no 31 pick which they used to draft Simon Black. (Can't remember, was Brent Green also one of the players Brisbane inherited from Fitzroy?)
So the effect was greater than just Johnson, but some astute trading and drafting also contributed to building their squad.
Darren Gasper, Shannon Grant, Anthony Rocca, Paul Licuria
Would have been a very formidable team in the early 2000s. But looking back on Sydney's draft selections over the last 10 years, not one genuine leauge champion has come from it bar Goodes.
Originally posted by swansrule100 id argue they just traded well full stop, it made no difference.
It made a HUGE difference. The fact they got 8 players for nothing meant that they in the long run were able to net themselves Simon Black, Brad Scott, Mal Michael and Richard Hadley as a direct result of trading ex-Fitzroy players they took in 96. Even last season saw them benefit from the effects of trading Nick Carter in 1998 for pick 45 in that years draft, which they used to draft Aaron Shattock. As a result of trading Shattock to Port they got two picks in last years draft which got them Pat Garner and Justin Sherman.
So even today they still benefit from the 8 free ex Fitzroy players they got and will so into the future and you can be certain that if they didn't get those 8 players they wouldn't of got the players they did.

Paul Licuria shouldnt really be part of this list. He was dished off to Collingwood when we had a surplus of good midfielders in the late 90s. Him and Troy Cook were average at best on our list, and with the likes of Kelly and Schwass in the midfield we never actually needed them.
But yes, we were very unlucky with the other mummy's boys, but at least I think it is now a thing of the past. More and more players these days are looking to come to Sydney, as opposed to the past when we lost potential stars for retirement-aged hacks.

And lets not forget their most important Fitzroy acquisition - Jonathan Brown
A lot of people in this thread are starting to sound like Eddie Maguire. Until I can buy a Red and White bucket hat in the Pitt St Mall I will consider the Swans a failure.
[Just a note that elements of this post were made tongue in cheek. JF I take your point and think it is a good one]
Originally posted by footyhead No, we should get a really great coach and do whatever he says.
Well done Footyhead. One of the few times you've said anything that makes sense.... of course we hired him halfway through 2002 so you're a little behind the times, but your call is still technically correct.
