I'd rather not, for a number of reasons, but really there are, and always have been players who have played very well for clubs they have been unhappy at. They are professional sportsmen for crying out loud who go out every week end to do a job. If they stop doing that job well pretty soon they stop getting paid. People on here often carry on about the mental side of footy and how much they admire players who have mental toughness and an ability to get themselves up when everything else is forcing them down. This is what the sad sacks do S/man, and sometimes, after a rousing win and in the heat of the moment, they are happy for a little while, and maybe hug a fan. I am not saying that Jolly is not happy, just that unhappy players can play well, and do, every week.

Plugger never really looked like a happy chap. He kicked about.. umm.. 1300 goals, I think.

Does anyone think it quaint and ironic that we're having a discussion about the perceived happiness of a fella named Jolly?

Its got nothing to do with self importance. Committed fans pay big bucks to travel and follow their team. While they only are a few, they can and do make a difference ? they are an oasis of support in an otherwise hostile crowd. The more of them there are, and the more noise they make is a contribution to negating home ground advantage. JF has been pushing this barrow for ages. All Darren did was to show his appreciation for that support and his commitment to our club, in turn the fans are happy to be acknowledged.

Mike, the last sentence of your post left you open to be misunderstood, but I think that is what you meant.

Ever heard of the cliche about money not being everything?

I never said that unhappy footballers dont play well, I just believe they play better when they are happy.

And Plugger proves this point too, as his 1993 and 1994 almost had him giving up the game. The move to Sydney made him much happier, and so he kicked almost 500 of those goals in those years for us.

Years of management experience give me a particular perspective on this, and I stick by it.

With pick 15, Melbourne picked up Lynden Dunn, from the Calder Cannons. His blurb is:
"Tall forward who presents well; is competitive and sharp around goals. Presented well across half forward in Cannons premiership side. His level 14.6 endurance result was impressive at the Draft Camp. From Mooney Valley FC."

Of course it's purely hypothetical who we would have got, but it's just something to keep in mind.

Fwiw I'm very happy with Jolley. Probably better to compare him with Andrew Erikson and James Mieklejohn rather than Dunn though - we get a game hardened ruckman, rather than two 'development' players that a) haven't made the grade as yet, or b) didn't make the grade. We could have used the three ruckman vs the Kangas - woulda bin a good way of really testing their defence.

The other thing you would have to consider is whether we needed the player to be available and ready to go this year, or in say 3 years time.

I suggest that we desperately needed a good ruckman for this season and the next few more than we needed a guy who may or may not develop into a decent player in 3 years time. And the beauty of Jolly is that he possibly still has 7-10 years at the top left in him, something that is a lottery with youngsters.

Of course Jolly could get run over and never play again, and then people will forever reckon he was a complete waste for a 1st round draft pick.

This was until Darren Jolly bolted over and started hugging and high-fiving us in the front row. He was soon followed by Jude Bolton, Amon Buchanan and Tadhg Kennelly.

The fact it was Jolly doing this of his own volition, and doing it BEFORE any other player really showed me how much he wants to be in Sydney, wants to be a part of the team and more importantly part of the club. This really was a case of actions speaking louder than words - while he has said how excited he has been about being in Sydney (and I didn't doubt this), his actions last night really showed that our trading for him will be a success.
You are definitely onto something there Mike. Normally at home games the players will cheer everyone BUT the Cheer Squad. I don't know if they are ashamed of the numbers in the Bay (or even worse, the people), but they basically always avoid clapping the CS in Sydney. It is very noticeable, and is actually pretty depressing. (In Melbourne interestingly they are far more forthcoming with recognition for the efforts the squad down there makes at getting them over the line.)

I got the impression that Jolly was really enthusastic to be up here at the after-match after the Hawks match. He was very positive about the Swans annd was deliberately dipolmatic towards his new supporters.

To see him run up to us like he did was just awesome. Simon from Tassie actually was moshing him at one stage! I kind of just patted his arm from the 2nd row to say thanks. I think we snapped a flag pole in all the mass celebrations and throng of bodies towards the fence.

It was actually quite a shock, and was very much appreciated. For a new player wanting to get off on the right foot with fans up here, he sure is doing the right thing.

Hopefully some of the others who tend to be a tad stand-offish towards us will learn to share the victory celebrations with us in the manor he did.

Thank you again Darren Jolly! Little things tend to make a win like that that much more memorable!
