Goodes news bad news for vertically challenged Swans

Stephen Doyle will go into hospital on Thursday and he'll be out for the rest of the season," Roos said.

The last two Swans to make their debut in their first seasons have been James Meiklejohn and Ricky Mott - both by necessity. He'd be the first Swan to force his way into the team in his first year since... O'Keefe?

So it took injuries to 3 of our ruckmen for Roos to finally see that Goodes should be played in the midfield. Goodes' clearance stats against WCE alone should mean that he plays as either ruckman or ruck-rover from now on, with freedom to roam into defense or attack as he sees fit.

Great news re Moore as well. Who makes way for him though....? My guess is Schneider - he was atrocious in the wet west.

Moore's debut is a good thing, to be sure, but does this mean he is an exceptional talent, or does it mean that our other kids - Malceski, Willoughby, Schmidt - aren't that great?

Roos is quite right on the Goodes providing another attacking option form the ruck, I remeber one second half goal againts the Coasters on the weekend which was classic Goodes Circa 2003.

Goode to someone to Goodes to Forward, goal !!! (or was that vice verca, with a goodes goal ?? can't remember.), why havn't they been playing this set up for the last 3 weeks at least. This was how it was when they played that great footy all that time ago.

It means that he's an exceptional talent, but if we all put heaps of pressure on him now I bet within 2 years we can either turn him into a crap player or send him home.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if he wanted to go home after turning out to be a midfield superstar. Roos will probably make him a tagger and play him in the back pocket

No you can't give him game time... 1st year players at the Swans are banned from getting game time till they become so bored with frustration that they conform to team rules - mediocrity at all costs.
Once that is acheived, the coach will never drop them no matter what they do, and he will never ever drop them to make way for a shinning up and come raw young talent.
Thats just the way things are at the Swans - crap player managment by a crap bunch of coaches and a crap footballing dept run by a crappy administration.

Goodes returned to the ruck for last weekend's clash with West Coast and Roos admitted seeing him there again confirmed one thing - it's probably the place for him.

If Barry Hall gets named Captain then I am ripping up my membership until we get a coach who has a bit of an idea about this Swans team.

Goodes back in the ruck is good for the short term. It does mean we have to go "back" to a defensive midfield as Goodes wont get many taps.

It dashes our long term hopes of having Doyle/Jolly being effective tap ruckmen delivering to an attacking midfield, streaming the ball down to Hall/Goodes forward line. Possibly the only way we would win a flag.

Oh well, least we'll win a few games this year.

I disagree.

Goodes got smashed in the hitouts, but he got a load of clean clearances. Hitouts become irrelevant for Goodes, because as ruckman, he is far more mobile than his direct opponent, and so will is able to recover far quicker and therefore is first to the ball, in front of almost every other midfielder in the centre square. If we was ruck-rover, he would have to contend with a smaller, faster and more mobile midfielder, which I doubt he would be as successful at.

Plus, our hopes of seeing Doyle at the centre bounce have probably been dashed anyway now that he is gone for the season.

And while Goodes is in the ruck, you can send Jolly or Ball to full forward. And then rotate them around so Goodes isnt being given too much of a workload.

Goodes in the ruck should have very little impact on the defensiveness of the midfield. In fact, if he can win a significant number of clearances himself, it is has the opposite effect.

Agree with all that.As NMW said elsewhere hit outs are pretty irrelevant unless they are to a teammate who can clear the ball.
Goodes is like an extra rover in the centre square for clearance purposes and around the ground it is more the skill of the midfielders to clear the ball rather than the skill of the ruckman.
The only problem would be when the oppostion ruckmen decides to punch it forward at all costs which would negate Goodes roving ability.But he did win a Brownlow so he knows what he is doing.
