    Reserves

    Another stroll in the park

    Sydney 10.1 15.5 23.7 29.15 (189)
    Wagga 0.1 1.2 2.3 3.3 (21)

Only arrived in the 2nd quarter so I didn't bother to jot down the goalkickers but McVeigh, Schneider and Grundy kicked a bagful and if you gave each of the forwards and midfielders a goal each you wouldn't be far off.

McVeigh was outstanding, he dominated the midfield easily and when he went forward he helped himself to a few goals.

At CHF, Grundy was impressive in that he managed to outmanouvre his opponent at the last second to complete the mark. He also offers a good lead.

Schneider, Malceski and Nicks cruised easily between the midfield and the half forward line. Some nice touches from all of them. Powell played at half-forward too, did okay I guess but not a stand out.

Shaw and Ericksen shared the rucking duties and resting at FF. They dominated easily but that's to be expected when their opponents were a good 5 inches or so shorter.

Campbell didn't have much to do all game, but he did give away a 50m penalty that led to a Wagga goal. Saw only a glimpse of Matt Davis, I think he was playing CHB but I hardly caught sight of him after half time.

No Heath James and no Ben Fixter.

You can't take too much out of this, Wagga struggled to get it past halfway when they had it. The young Swans ran hard and played on at every opportunity, and were just too classy.

James and Fixter are holding up the injured list.

Pity we can't get some of the reserves player's stats into our dream teams. Seems like a bit of a waste of time. Long trip home for the Tigers.

What a waste of time. Circle work would have been more useful for them!!

If scorelines like that continue to be the norm, something must be done quickly.
Could we spread our reserves player over a number of different teams or something? That may be too much of an impost on the Canberra league, but how about the Sydney league?
          Our reserves need competition.

BTW if we have another free spot on the seniors list, I'd love to see Grundy promoted.

Don't the Brisbane reserves play with one less player? I'm sure I've heard that somewhere.

They definitely need some competition, especially the defenders. If you were an young up and coming defender, you'd be praying hard not to be drafted by the Swans. How can you hope to develop in this kind of environment?

Who was the bright spark who thought it would be a good idea to have Sydeny's young elite AFL footballers developing their skills against sheep farmer rabble?

Is the Sydney grade competition any better?

Much worse, that's why they're in Canberra.

Well Andrew Iresland was very clever in moving the Swans from the VFL - to a crap league - great stuff.

The players who have made it from that comp are too many to mention but it annoys me when I see blokes like Campbell and Malceski wallowing away in the reserves

Keep in mind, the Swans reserves have never won this comp. Wagga are always weak. The comp is extremely uneven. But on the whole I agree. Maybe look to the VFL again?

Good for confidence I guess. What do they do after the game...retire to the RSL or bowlo for a cold one with the locals?

The VFL would be a tough gig to manage. An alliance with an existing club would see us revert to having a limit to the number of players who could play, meaning the rest would be left to wallow in the SFL again. It would also mean a return to a dozen players travelling every week.

A stand-alone club would cost an arm and a leg and I doubt the VFL could be persuaded to let the Swans play at home every other week, since it would increase costs for the rest of the competition.

There is no doubt that the Swans reserves have increased significantly this year, even with a moderate level of injuries on the list. Last year there was decent competition most weeks but its hard to see anyone other than Belconnen and Queanbeyan pushing the Swans as things stand.

Maybe they do need to think about playing with one or two fewer players because otherwise the young players risk getting into bad habits, not worrying about precise disposal because they know they can win it back pretty easily.

How about they go north and play in Queensland with the Brisbane reserves. Might learn a few things. Call it the 'northern' league.

As you say Liz, injuries are the key. Maybe a good option would be to combine the ACT and Sydney comps. Canberra could put together 3 very good sides. I know very little about the SFL. Pie in the sky I guess.

I think that this was organised before Ireland came to the Swans.
