    Umpires

Dont want to dwell on this too much, coz I think we'll be reading a lot about it in the news tomorrow, but how bad were they. I mean, we always reckon they are bad coz we are biased, but seriously, today they were shockingly incompetant.

When I got into the car, the MMM commentary was just wrapping up, with Stan Kekovic letting lose on the yellow maggots. And as I drove past the SCG on Moor Park Rd I saw Dermot Brereton and shouted out the window to ask him what he thought of the umps, and he replied that he thought they were shocking.

    So many blatantly incorrect decisions:
    - Port player's kick out on the full lands at the boundary ump's feet and he misses it
    - Buchanan and Hall having their heads ripped off
    - Ablett's kick touched off the boot but called out on the full
    - Port's 1st 3 goals coming from poor umpiring decisions

Many others, but these are just some examples.

I'm so glad you posted a thread on this topic!

I know many would say, oh well you are all just one eyed supporters anyway (which we are!) BUT...

The umpires were worse collectively then I have ever seen before, led beautifully by one Darran Goldspink.

A third of Port's goals came from terrible umpiring decisions.

The thing that frustrates me more then anything, a goal umpire makes ONE MISTAKE and they get sent to the reserves, but the field umpires make multiple (especially Goldspink) mistakes but I can virtually guarantee that he will be running around again next week runing some senior AFL game. Odds on we will have Goldspink again within a fortnight.

    UNBELIEVABLE!!

As depressing as it sounds, I actually thought the other umpires were worse than goldspink today.

That really is saying something about the other umpires as it was our friend who did not play the free kicks to Hall or Buchanan for getting their heads ripped off!

I was standing 3 metres from the moronic boundary umpire.. I saw it land out, the 1000 people aorund him saw it was out.. he watched the flight of the ball to his feet.. yet.. it was in?!

Damn i did well not hurl something at that idiot.. and for the audacity of Goldspink to not pay the high tackle to Amon, and then afterwards tell amon off for someh=thing (im assuming questioning the decision) was a disgrace.

            Re: Umpires

+ Schaubs wearing an elbow to the groin right in front of an umpire. It's Andrew Schauble, not Matthew Lloyd so if he goes down he probably has actually been hit.

Monty was taken high, but after how quickly he went from writhing in pain to jumping up and perfectly fine when given the 50 against the Bombers you have to wonder if the umpires may wonder a little for a little while before giving him a free.

I thought the umpires were generally poor for both teams. My main gripe is that there seems to be no protection for guys putting their head over the ball lately.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

apparently the commentators on the tv broadcast said that roos had collated a whole bunch of goldspinks decisions from the last few sydney games he's umpired and sat down with him during the week in a board to talk to him about it...

obviously didn't have the effect he was hoping for?

It just makes the game so frustrating.. decisions like some of those can turn a game. Ridiculous that in a game of footy the umpires basically ruin it.

              get off goldspink.

I agree, they were incompetent today.

And the holding the ball rule is the worst rule in footy today. How many times do we see one guy actually go for the ball, and the opposition guy sits back waiting, knowing that he just has to lay a simple tackle and he gets a free. Where is the reward for making the ball your objective? Where is the reward for attacking the ball?

The HTB decision (against Kirk, I think) that led to Port's first goal was the one that pissed me off the most. OK, so he was lying on top of the ball but it was about as blatant an "in-the-back" as you'd ever hope to see. How on earth was he meant to get it out?

The one against Kennelly in the final quarter was probably a correct decision as far as how the rule operates but is a great illustration of how it penalises the player going for the ball. Tiger didn't dive on it to hold it up, he put his neck quite literally on the line to win possession and then got tackled. As, I said, technically correct decision but went completely against the spirit of trying to win the ball.

Umpiring was shocking, but Port were also dealt some very bad calls too.

It would have been an extremely long list and I'd imagine a horrendously long meeting as a result!

There was another OOBOTF infront of the Dally M area... infront of the umpire again, yet he didnt call it. Goldspink tries too hard to rule a game and dominate it, instead of fairly umnpiring it. He cant get into a good position to see what is going on around the ball. VERY poor display by the umps, they were inconsistent all day. But thats footy, and the arguments and blow ups are what we love.

Impossible is not a fact, it's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration, it's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing!

From my vantage point they got that one right. It looked as if it landed on the line.

Liz i can assure you it was out, as i said earlier, i was not 3 metres away from that call, and i stood up to watch it.. had a great view of the line and the ball - and it was out by at least 3 or 4 inches.
What is so disappointing is that the Boundary Ump was in position but didnt call it, if he wasnt in a great spot sure, but what makes my blood boil is that he was right there yet didnt make the call. Its moments like that you being wondering whats going on, some serious quesitons need to be asked.

Interesitng it was almost in the exact same position as the shocking call made last year against the Kangas, though it was a a differnt ump - i'll remember his face till the day i die! Little leg waxing blood-nut.. GRR
