I agree that the umpiring was very poor today. But as others have said, I think the umps were generally consistent (albeit consistently bad!), which is infinitely better than being one-sided.

I think the HTB rule definitely needs looking at: its only fair that a player who attacks the ball should be rewarded, but by the same token, you want to keep play as free-flowing as possible. I guess the ultimate question is: in what situations does the ball carrier deserve to be rewarded and in what situations does the tackler deserve to be rewarded? And if both deserve to be rewarded, who takes preference? This gives rise to the slightly more philosophical question of which is more valuable: attack or defense? For my mind, we should always give the benefit to those who persue the football with desparation - after all, isn't it better that we encourage our footballers to go in and win the ball rather than wait for others to lose it?

As for the high tackle on Barry Hall, I think Dermott Brereton's comment's say it all: "it's a different set of rules"!

Tredrea also seemed to be under that set of rules - I thought he was very harshly dealt with by the umpires today.
Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

I thought Goodes gave Wanganeen a good shove in the back and got away with it on the wing. Probably because Wanganeen dives if a breeze wafts from behind but it looked like a free to me.

if that's the one I'm thinking of, there was no contact from Goodes - Wanganeen was hurtling along after the ball and overbalanced

Goodes did claim he was innocent by arm waving. They only showed it once so I could well be wrong!

Umpiring was absolutely shocking. I am also in Bay 29 and was right near the OOTF. No doubt about it being out. In relation to the high tackle on Hall, my 5yo son said to me "Dad, that was a high tackle and should have been a free kick." If he can see it and read the play from where we sit, why the hell can't Goldspunk call it from in front of it?

                    umpiring was horrible

the late descisions & the lack of free-kicks when it was obvious to everyone else one should have been awarded.

oh and the occasional stupid errors of judement which led to a number of Port goals
A little man is sitting in a room with two doors. One door says "Do Not Enter" and the other says "Do Not Exit". So he just sits there, holding his hat.

What made the OOBOTF decision so bad was the Boundary Ump, was right there, not a 100m away!!!

Kekovic (?) said that the Umpires need to take a good hard look at themselves - their performance can determine whether a teams season is going to continune or be over pretty much by round 10 - the way they umpired yesterday was appalling - but as I have said many times before - Goldspink will never ever admit he is wrong. So whilst he may have had a meeting with Roos - he would not have admitted that he was in the wrong.
However the other 2 were pretty bad as well. Its time that umpires were accountable and (as they do in the rugby league) if you get it wrong too often - you get dropped.
Goldy may as well be named in the opposition run on side when he umpires the Swans.
And as for that call for, I think it was Ablett or Vogels, to play on after taking a mark the MMM team suggested that as it wasnt Matthew Lloyd with the ball, who takes a couple of minutes to do his thing, that the call was one of the most ridiculous they have ever seen. Couldnt agree more.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

It confirms my hatred of Sheedy that he had a sooky la la about a legitimate free kick paid against his team last week, then they get away with a dodgy free here and he says "We're heading in the right direction. I've felt that all the time, but it's just good to get a win to give the fans something to believe." What a knob.

Also to mention. Vogels mark and free kick in front of the Churchill stand. As he was running in, the umpire called play on. Vogel side stepped and passed to Moore who then kicked a behind.

The point is that Matthew Lloyd can take 3 minutes to set up and kick for goal and Vogel was called to play on as he was running in.
