I found it hard to believe on the replay that there were so many spare seats on the Hill! Being in Bay 28, I was probably looking at them all for the entire day, but it felt like it was a sell out. Am i incorrect? ...

For what it is worth, i prefer to let the crowd/game make their own atmosphere. Artificially 'trying' to make an atmosphere by banging a drum is just that, artificial.

It is great when the crowd responds to a close/exciting game of their own accord, no need to create what is not there.

Good luck to you if you want to, but best to keep it where it belongs with like minded people in the cheersquad.

Mate, no offence, but I am NOT a media slut. Nor do I want to ever be seen as one. I'm not there to get the drum on the bloody telecast. I'm there to get the crowd loud, in time and behind the team in unison. To me it is NO secret that the team lifted appreciably in confidence once they realise that the crowd was enthused by their performance.

It is hard to quantify why the effect of a loud supportive crowd is still such an influence in this professional day and age. But it is still very very much there.

Ahhh, so YOU were the guy banging that drum in the O'Reilly. My ears are still ringing.

But I like the guy that quipped to you, "Do you do weddings, mate?"

I don't think it's surprising at all. The players are performers, of sorts, and it gets the adrenilin pumping when you know you're being appreciated. I've played in rock bands (ok - a rock band) in front of audiences and its very hard to get into it yourself when you have a quiet crowd in front of you, compared to when you can see they're willing you on and having fun themselves.

I know what you are saying mate, but you really have to be selective with when you start that particular one up. It generally only seems to work when we are on a roll and everyone is up for it.

Again starting it from my open position behind the goals (at least at the SCG) does not have the desired affect, because my voice just goes up into nothing. And the people in the tier up the back hardly ever join in the chants, even when Ben & I get up and get them going. (And security are out to get him for heinously standing on the seats like I do to get the chants going. Like whatever?!)

                That chants works
                A) when the O'Reilly starts it up
                B) generally when it is raining and a great percentage of people are all huddled up the back closer together
                C) when we are on a roll and have kicked a few goals in succession
                D) when the game is close

Chanting it all the time would be defeating its impact. The team again knows that we the supporters have confidence in them when that chant starts up.

I still want to get "Ole Ole Ole Ole Syd-nee Syd-nee" started. watch this space; I have a devious and dastardly plan at ways of getting that going. I don't think this is above the Sydney public, given that so many of us follow other sports.

I'm really looking forward to the Sydney V Geelong game on Saturday night July 9th at the SCG.

Providing we are doing well, we can probably persume Geelong will be up there, we could get a sell out at the 'G'.

Off topic a bit, but lets just deal with it.

Big big kudos to the brethren in Bay 29 for you efforts on Sunday. Loud and proud from the 2nd 1/4 on. You really do ROCK 29 and make me proud *sniff* every week.

JF - For what it's worth I love the drum, but it would be good to get a few more strategically placed in the crowd. The sound of 2 or 3 cranking up around the ground would be just too HUGE to think about. Keep it up.

The "ole" sounds great. Also I used to love the "One Tony lockett" theme. Just shows the Sydney crowds are more imaginative than the rest.

As I've said to you before about the Freo Dockers' drumming - it is more like a dirge!

I teased the Undertaker on MSN chat over this post. (And will start on Supermario soon!) Unfortunately I do not believe it. I have been to enough Roosters matches these days to know the type of atmosphere their hard core group can belt out. Not only loud but extremely diverse in the variety of songs they sing. Sure they can go quiet when they lose. And Roosters fans only the whole are extremely fickle as well, thus meaning many don't come when they start losing. But when on song they are not far off the Green & Gold Army at Socceroo matches.

Why are the Chook Pen better than us? There is a minimum of rules and people are there to chant sing fart and do whatever they do. Basically have FUN. They have a whole bay that has been kept aside as a loud supporters bay by the club. They pay for their season tickets as part of a special unreserved Chook Pen membership. It is simple. There are no intimidating taped barriers to keep 'unwanteds' away. And the group would sit there are (at least from I can see) self-regulating.

Ok, NRL groups CAN be more relaxed as they have
                            A) no banners to make each week
                            B) little need to organise group bookings of tickets, with most grounds not being full, and most grounds having hills where they can still rock up to and stand togther as a group.
                            C) can drink if they want, with everyone generally self-regulated. (If you are too drunk, your mates will tell you off).

But what they have is NUMBERS. It may look good to have all those 'foreign visitors' in their given red caps right next to us in Bay 21. But we are still lacking the extra 30-50 people who could turn an OK squad with too many empty seats into an awesome squad. There were talks that we'd be getting Riverview boarders to come to games. Don't know what happened to that, as we haven't seen any so far.

Still you can only do what you can do with the cattle you have. Your Rooster friend Bam Bam caught us on a good day.

                            JF

PS:- Here they are as well.

This is from a thread on the Austadiums.com forum that some of you may find interesting.
