          SYDNEY swans

I can't believe this post. The swans are Sydney team, that has a history in Melbourne. We should continue to support those fans south of ther border with as many away games in Melbourne as we can convince the AFL to give us, but we shoudl NOT give away home games.

I must say this raises for me the issue of the future direction of this club. Frankly our administrators don't really offer much of a public vision for the direction of the club. They may do so behind closed doors but as a ten year swans members I get no real sense of were Colless and our board want the club to go.

While I loved watching Paul Kelly, play and think it is great he is on the board, I really do question the SYDNEY Swans electing two people NOT from Sydney to the only democratic board spots. Kel should have been appointed.

Says to me the club still doesn't have real sydney roots and is instead a melbourne club palying in the sydney market.

I wish this was not the case but after ten years as a member I can't but help think it is time for some home grown leadership around our club.

I tend to agree with this. It is bad enough that SMFC is on the back of the Guernsey. But it will be a while yet until AFL actually becomes 'Australian' (if it ever does). The problem is the AFL powerbrokers are happy to keep the game in Melbourne, and with the support and crowd figures they get there, I wouldn't blame them.

Prenda: no character assasination was intended. I called the post dumb, not you. You are entitled to your opinion, however, when that opinion is something as controversial as the one you posted, you cant expect people not to hit back with counter arguments. As I stated before, its quite possible that the Dogs will take that game back to Melbourne anyway, therefore increasing the number of Swans games in Melbourne. The fact is, the Swans are now a Sydney team, well and truly entrenched in Sydney's sporting landscape. They may not pull the crowds of some of the southern state teams, but they do alright here. I see no reason to increase the number of Melbourne games for the sake of Melbourne based supporters at the expense of less home games in Sydney. There are more Swans fans in Sydney than there are in Melbourne.

I dont have a problem with SMFC on the back of the jumpers, as that is the history and tradition of the club and it great that those links are being remembered.
I can't really see the benefit of a home game in Melbourne, there would be no financial benefit from the AFL as far as I can see, as Melbourne is not a developing market (which is why the AFL gives money to the Western Bulldogs for the Sydney/Darwin games) and to North for the Manuka games AFAIK

4 small letters on the back of a guernsey recognising a long history prior to moving to Sydney is a bad thing???? We are not a team like Adelaide that was started from scratch without any prior history and to want to leave our history behind is ridiculous to say the least.

As for home games in Melbourne, the Dogs are likely to take their game back there, so it gives us a chance to push for extra games in Melbourne. Also, how do you plan the club market this in terms of memberships (especially considering the likelihood of the Dogs taking their game back home) - Sydney members get a 10 match pass instead of 12??? Or would they have an away match included, and if so, how would this be arranged with the home club?

                  I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

This is one of the worst things I have ever read on this forum...Geez, you have to know where your club has come from and I think it is about time the Melbourne based swans fans copped a fairer go from you Sydney lot. I think that SMFC on the back of the jumper is the least that the club can do to show its rich history South of the border. I do not agree with the suggestion to move the Swans home games from the SCG to Melbourne but I know why us Melburnian Swans supporters would want to raise this issue. I remember a few years ago that the club was trying to get us Melburnians out of the picture altogether and that was just stupid. Don't let the club ever try to make that mistake again. It would seem, as a group, that the fans down here in Melbourne are the most loyal the club has at the moment and has ever had. I just want all Swans supporters to remember where this team has come from - I realise that our future direction is, and has to be, more Sydney focused but do not shut us out.

It's pretty simple really, when you look at the numbers. It's got nothing to do with what we want, but rather a realistic thing based on everyone's wants. If it came down to pleasing just us.. I'd be pushing for 11 games at the SCG, 3 games at Telstra Stadium and 8 games at the MCG

Why do teams move games? In most cases the criteria is:

Game against a low-drawing (usually interstate) opponent. The selling club says "ok, we probably wouldn't get much of a crowd for this one anyway. How about you buy it for $xxx from us. This amount will be more than we would get for hosting you, but you will probably make a profit because all of your games are played against interstate teams anyway".

First point. It also doesn't make a lot of sense to sell games to QLD, WA or SA. Negates the point of trying for more games in Melbourne, plus it's an excellent way of losing more games.

It also makes no sense to sell off games involving teams that traditionally attract big crowds to Sydney - ie: Essendon or Collingwood or Geelong. And given that a Melbourne team might have one trip to Sydney, as opposed to our 4, 5 or 6 trips down there, in THEORY their supporters will just travel up en-masse for the one game (giving us a bigger crowd) as opposed to our sydney based supporters choosing the away games they go to. This is not counting in the Melbourne Swans members etc of course.

And you can't sell off games involving teams with a low supporter base in Melbourne - they're the ones trying to flog us THEIR games.

                          What games are left?

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

                            Great! Makes me proud

In the past couple of years it seems the AFL and the Swans have given up on Sydney and gone back to getting Melbourne involved. Don't fool yourself into thinking the SMFC was anything but a marketing move.

It sucks that your team was moved from South Melbourne to Sydney and I hope any team I follow doesn't get moved. BUT COME ON, Is it a Sydney team or not? I am probably in the group that if a second team comes to Sydney (provided that it is a new team) I will think about supporting them. I am Sydney through and through and the South Melbourne links to the Swans are off-putting at best (but can be ignored). I would prefer all ties from SMFC to be severed and a real Sydney club created from the ashes (Sydney Phoenix? ). Hopefully one day...

South Melbourne are a very large part of the Swans history, just as Fitzroy is to Brisbane

Thats the exact condescending attitude we can do without.

Sure - no Sydney Swans but probably a Sydney -insert name here- instead. Which, thanks to priority picks and without the hopeless *cough* tradition *cough* we inherited, would of won the premiership by now! But this is a very old topic... though I believe the SMFC links does not help the growth of the Swans in Sydney.
