While I beleive LRT's defensive game is up to standard, the glaring thing to note about the swans play is that he is never used offensively. And its the same with a lot of young blokes. They rarely get the ball passed to them, so the only possesions they get are ones they get themselves.

No wonder few of them are developing, or getting an confidence. The young ones are going to make stuff ups occationally, but if they only get a couple of chances to be involved in the link play per game, the pressure is amplified.

Its like we are playing two sides out there. The older guys in one team, and the younger guys in another. The whole playing groups attitude needs to be seriously looked at. Not to mention the tantrums some forwards are making ala Richo.

It is a pleasure to be able to agree with you barry. Although our views on LRT differ I agree that if he, or Moore, or Potter or one of the Auskick kids are in the team they should be given the ball when they are the best option. I have noticed LRT and Vogels find space a number of times and been spotted by the guy with the ball and then ignored. The result is usually a kick or handpass instead to a player under pressure, a turn over, and a loose man created by the young Swan running of his man in an effort to attack.

This is one of the side-effects with a large leadership group. A large leadership group creates the elitism mentality (not if they are elite mind you) and the youngsters suffer as a consequence.

There was a perfect example of a youngster not receiving the ball after a kickout on Saturday night. IIRC Mathews had the ball in the back pocket and MVeigh was 15m clear about 30 m away just on the 50m line. The TV angle showed it perfectly and you could clearly see McVeigh yelling for the ball, but Mathews waited and waited, eventually the McVeigh option was closed down, so after being told to play on, Mathews kicked to a pack on the wing.

I've noticed Mathews particularly do this a few times in recent weeks.

You're right in that it was a glaring delay in decision making and obvious on the coverage but remember - Ben Matthews would even do this to Barry Hall.

Dunno that he would do it to Hall, but maybe some of the other more experienced members of the side.
