It was like watching a highlights reel of "Greatest Umpiring Bloopers".

You'd luv to see that smug Derek Humphries-Git down in front of a video and say "Now explain that you effete smarmy prat!!!"

No, it wasn't just you. I watched it on the teeve and I couldn't stop screaming at some of those decisions. I think the worst ones have been identified. Even a mate of mine who was at the game said that the Saints fans were embarrassed at some of their frees.
So, even though the boyz played some real crap with skills at rock bottom it must be very dispiriting if you're not getting a fair go. And trying to even up the count in the last quarter is not going to help when the damage has already been done.

The one that really got me was X Clarke takes a bounce our player grabs the jumper, no whistle for holding the ball. Our player loses grip.Clarke regains it on the bounce (still in possession) is tackled to the ground, ball up. How many prior opportunities can a player have.

They paid us a couple of very soft ones in the last stanza.

But then how can you blame the umpires for their mediocrity given they don't get dropped so have no upward pressure, just like our players who should get dropped for us but never do.

Thank heavens for this thread. Generally I try to avoid criticising umpires. It is a difficult task. They need to make quick decisions and much of the game is subjective (eg How long is holding the ball?).
BUt I have to agree with all the posts above. They were apalling. Very frustrating watching on the telly.

            GOLD!!!!

Gehrig should have been paid at least two other frees and Riewoldt one when Bolton did a great spoil but LRT was not looking at the contest.

For once the errors in front of goal favoured us by about 4 to 3.

            O'Loughlin MARK!!!!

The most amazing thing was that there was no replay and was never mentioned again by the commentators.

Ackland non decision was correct, he slipped as the tackler appoached causing the light, high contact.

At one stage in the game against the Saints when ANOTHER shocking decision was made (no push in the back to Leo Barry by Fraser) I was just in a pure state of shock and depression at the umpiring tripe we get dished every week, I simply put my head in my hands and almost cried.

              The blatant incosistency is unbelievable!

There was a replay after the next break - Quaters and Tim thought it was a clear mark. Walls said he thought it must have been touched, although he seemed to just make that up.

I was given pause this morning after reading this article -

However, the inconsistencies in umpiring, over the last two games particularly, have just made me angry. My wife was pleading with me to explain some of the decisions. While we all agree that the Swans were abyssmal, there's no greater turn off from a code of sport than umpiring that cannot be understood.

If the AFL are trying to attract new spectators to the game in NSW they need to address the crap umpiring the Swans cop week in and week out.

I also agree with some of the comments here. If our midfield gave each other some space and looked to break and receive rather than stacks on, I reckon we would be coping a few less dodgy decisions (particularly HTB and Throws). This can't explain not paying a mark, the Saints ruckman taking it out and the Saint's FF pushing in the back.....

The way I understood his comments were that the only plausible explanation he had for it not being paid were it was touched off the boot. No footage to confirm or otherwise. It seemed to me he thought only MOL got hands on the ball in the marking contest.

Except that the tone of his voice suggested it was fact that the ball had been touched off the boot, not that he was speculating that it might have been. And none of the commentators claimed to have seen the umpire signal that this was the reason it wasn't paid.

Walls had clearly made up his mind pre-game that the evening was going to be his 2cents worth of anti-swans cr@p podium. Some of the stuff he came out with was just embarassing.

I agree that the umpiring was shocking, but i am perplexed that people seem to think that free kick counts should be roughly the same at the end of a match.

Google says there 979 mentions of "cretin" and 26,800 of "moron" in Australia.

Wonder how many match the 1197 referred to?
