There were two occasions last night when I was inspired to get up on my hind legs and yell out "Mug lair!" One was when Schneids went for a run through the centre square as if he was going to get to the other end and goal; he was run down. The other was when he ran down the line into the left forward pocket and kicked a behind instead of centring the kick. I don't know if this is what he does in the seconds but it doesn't work at the top level.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

And how many times do we choose to play on from inside the 50 metre arc when a set shot would surely have brought a less rushed shot on goal. I just hate it to see the players in the midfield actually get a decent pass up to one of our HF/FF line player. Only for them to flip out an arsey handpass that was never on to a player who is under pressure who ends up muffing a shot he A) should not be missing in the first place and B) should never have been given.

No wonder we are so inaccurate in front of goal!

Agreed, but it just seems that more go askew at TD, than other venues.

The poor players cant win can they? There are plenty of posts on here encouraging them to play on, rather than stand around waiting for an option to present itself.

Should we be encouraging young players to back themselves or pull them for "being a mug lair"?

Again, the players cant win can they?

Crouch has a set shot from 50m, but doesn't want to be compared with poor Bucky in the "most innaccurate" category Ch10 popped on the screen before the game.

So should he go back and try to be a "hero", knowing that if he misses everyone derides him for making the wrong choice? Or does he handball it to Hall, who although under pressure, is running towards goal?

The end result only failed because ROK missed from directly in front with his non-preferred. But if Crouchies effort on goal instead had dropped five meters shot only to be punched through, would he have gotten more credit?? Doubt it.

Oh, the poor players - just can't win can they... yep, that's right!!

Crouch is an AFL player. He should be criticised for not having a shot. If he missed he should be criticised for missing. FFS, plenty of players in the U18 in the ACTFL could have kicked it.

As for Schneids, the more mug lair the better.

Crouch should of had a shot coz he kicked one from a tighter angle earlier. Baz had a player hot on his heals. Stupid!!

No, the end result failed because the ball was given to BBBH running into a crowd of 3 St Kilda players and couldn't get out a clean handball. ROK picked up the crumbs - he was only involved in the play by chance. Quite simply, the wrong decision was made.

The dangerous consequence out of this is that next time Crouch is venturing into our forward 50's, his direct opponent knowing his apparent weakness will zone-off and double-team someone one.

Sheeds was a master of this trick some years back. We simply dont have an answer if they decide to play a loose man in defence. As long as we sent someone to match him up, Sheeds would just send another guy down. Eventually, we have to send some guy of Crouch attacking quality up forward and then, the presence of such player is irrelevant to the strategy the Dons was playing.

Other teams now adopt this tactics for the battles in the middle. Adelaide was one of such. The depth they have with their midfield means that the advantage they have in 10-on-10 midfield set-up is actually more than 5-on-5 midfield set-up. The gap between their second group of midfielders and ours is simply huge so biggest the number there actually means better advantage for them.
