End of season cull - up to 11 players

After Saturday nights listless, heartless, spiritless and uncommitted to the team yelp, I have come to the conclusion that Roosy and the match committee have to FINALLY retire, delist and/or trade up to 11 players (if that's possible) from the current list - even though some of these players are clearly his mates that he has a lot of faith in. The players are as follows -

Retire - Maxfield, Ball and Nicks
Delist - James & Fixter (due to there continuos injuries hurting the club by not playing), Buchanan (a player who overruns the ball, fumbles and misses bread and butter shots on goal has to go), Fosdike and Spriggs
Trade (if possible) - Doyle (same situation as James & Fixter, but an AFL club could take a punt on him), Powell (could be better at another club) and Matthews (could get a similar midfielder of lesser games but with an attacking side to his game)

I sincerely believe that this club has the potential to be a flag contender, but we are only as good as our weakest links and unfortunately there are between 10-15 weakest links at present that have to either leave the club (as above) or have to and/or will improve rapidly.

If the club does go for a massive cull as predicted above, I believe they could then look to recruit (if available of course) a gun midfielder, a good reliable key position backman, a couple of midfielder/utility type of players from other AFL clubs that have yet to reach there potential and could be traded for Matthews, Powell and/or Doyle (maybe even Fosd***head), think outside the square (like with Vogels) and recruit mature age players that have dominated the country competitions, the WAFL, SANFL and VFL and of course youngsters through the usual route of the under 18 competition.

    Your thoughts guys !!!???

Also, does anyone know the maximum players a club can delist at the end of each season ?
Well somebody told me, You had a boyfriend, Who looks like a girlfriend,That I had in February of last year, It's not confidential, I've got potential

Somebody told me, The Killers, Hot Fuss, 2004.

I agree with you in principle. However, if you're looking to trade for players, you have to offer up players that other clubs would actually want on their list, which means that by only offering up some of the "deadwood", you aren't going to get anything. I'm not sure what the story is in terms of out of contract players and the notion of "free transfers". If they do exist in AFL, you'd be relying on a couple of decent players coming up through that method, otherwise you would have to be willing to give up players that are attractive to other clubs.

If we were to cut our list by 11, the Rookie Draft would have to provide a lot of the players to come onto the list, because you wouldn't want to be going that deep into the National Draft, just because you don't usually see clubs take more than about 6 picks in the National Draft, and if it's a thin draft, well, you probably won't get much out of the lower picks.

    I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

Doyle is injury prone but occasionally clubs are willing to take a punt on a big ruckman. If not then delist.

I find it very disappointing that Powell has never developed with us as he has always looked quite talented. I'd like to see him go elsewhere as I think he could be a very good footballer. I suspect that our ability to develop players may be a contributing factor to his underperformance.

        My expectation, at this stage:
        Retire: Maxfield, Ball, Nicks
Delist: James, Fixter, Sundqvist, Powell, Fosdike
        Possibly delist: Spriggs

In addition to any trades. In reality, you wouldn't want to cull any more than about nine players in any one season - unless you have a lot of early draft picks, it doesn't actually achieve anything.

Trade: MOL, Leo Barry, Schauble, Williams, O'Keefe

Trade baits have done nothing wrong, but are on the wrong side of their careers, or perceived value is higher than actual value.

I doubt anyone would pick up MOL because of injury. Williams probably only has a year or two left, so unlikely to be picked up either, unless it was by a team thinking they were on the cusp of a tilt at the flag and his ability could add that touch of class. Schauble needs to be playing if we are to get any interest for him, while Barry and O'Keefe could get us something in return.

Lets hope Richmond, Adeliade or Freo fall just short this year.

Should have traded him in 2002 when he was one of the elites in the AFL and we could have received a lot for him. When I suggested that though I was pilloried for the next few years. Keeping him doesn't really seemed to have placed us in a significantly better than position than if we had a couple of young guns in his place now.

nor should Leo Barry or MOL in my opinion. Leo is an all australian defender and has done some brilliant jobs on top fowards over the last two years, yes he may be good trade bait but hes one of the best out there at doing what he does. On MOL, he is a quality player who seems to be getting fitter by the week. He was very influential in 2003 with 41 goals in just 16 games and works well with Barry Hall. Sure it would have been nice to get some young guns but if Mick still has a few years left in him then I can't see any reason to trade him now considering he wouldn't be of much value. He has 13 goals in his last 4 games and consistent goal kickers are what we're lacking at the moment.

Geez, that is almost 1/3 of the list.

Youngsters audition for the rest of the year:
Sundquist, Powell (if he is fit), Macelski, Schmidt, Willougby and Fixter.

Each with a minimum of three games which means about 2 of them playing every weeks between now and the end of the year.
