I think you have to apply a bit more logic to this scenario:

Firstly, what are St Kilda after should they not be able to afford the big fella beyond 2005? They have a very balanced team at the moment, with the only question mark being on their Ruck stocks (perhaps). So they are going to want Jolly and several picks.

Secondly, from the trading club's perspective, who wants out of Sydney and back to Melbourne. So if we are talking about Darren Jolly, does he want to get back to Melbourne? Is St Kilda attractive to him given they have Blake and Ackland? He's sitting pretty as the No 1 Ruck in Sydney, living his dream and getting better as a player.

I can't see us upsetting the team balance because I haven't heard and rumblings that players want out of the club.

As I said above, Brisbane is the more likely target.

I think that realistically the only Swan St Kilda would consider id Goodes and when you think about it they are not disimilar players.

Well there are a couple of scenarios to consider if the club wants Kosi, and if Kosi wants to come here:

1. We need to trade with the Saints to shore up the weak areas. They will only have weak areas if they fail before or during finals time. I would say they lack a bit of height and run in the backline, a bit of hardness in the midfield (with Harvey likely to retire) and a second tall centre-square ruck option (Blake is really just a pinch hitter, and better around the ground). Plus maybe a tough third forward (although Hammil if fit is more than sufficient). That leaves us with offering players like Doyle, Saddington, OKeefe, Ablett, Buchanan, Powell, Moore. Whether they want any of these, or we are really willing to lose any of them is the question. They will also want high draft picks, and the 15-ish that we could offer in addition would be weaker than Carlton's offer.

2. Trade with Hawthorn for one of there high picks. Since Carlton is unlikely to help us secure Kosi (since they are going for him too), our only bet left is to try to pick up Hawthorn's second draft pick (4?). What is it that Hawthorn wants? I'd say a good tall forward, or a good strong defender. Again we'd look at players like Saddington and OKeefe, as well maybe Schauble, Fixter, Powell, Sundqvist. For such a high pick we'd have to pay a high price, and probably more than one or even two players.

He is playing very well the last few games, would obviously be a handy player but he really does seem to fit positions that we have covered (not including him as a CHB). If we are going to trade big and wave a lot of money around I am not sure this is the right trade to make... it would be getting a player because he is the best available in that period, not getting a player because we have assessed our list and he is the best available in the position we require filling.

At $600K pa, this would I think make him the highest paid player at the Swans, correct? That could lead to an interesting dynamic.

It's staggering to think that a kid might pass up a chance at an extra few million $ over the course of his career because he luvs his mates. Strewth, for that sort of money you could buy new mates! Admirable but surely foolhardy?

Anyway, suspect this is going to be the most lively trade period for some years.

Best for everybody if he goes to Carlton. That'll make the Blues stronger but still not too much of a threat, and weaken the Saints at the same time.

We already have an injury-prone ruckman/forward with plenty of potential. IMO what we need most is a tall, strong, uncompromising fullback. As good as Kosi is, he ain't that.

He is from the NSW side of the border and yes did play for the Bushrangers at TAC Cup level, but at the Under 18 National Championships he played for NSW. However as his home town is closer to Melbourne than Sydney there isn't any possihle "go home" factor that no doubt some would like to see.

The same goes for Brent Staker of West Coast who is from Broken Hill which is closer to Adelaide than Sydney so if he left West Coast to "go home" he would be more likely to end up at the Crows or Power than the Swans.

I think I read that his family moved to Canberra when he played for the Rams - wonder if they are still there? If so, maybe we would be close to home.

I'm inclined to agree.

Kosi is potentially a great player - though his injury record must place a question mark over his value - but I'd rather we spent modestly at the trade table searching for the next Andrew Dunkley than threw the kitchen sink at a player who will almost certainly stay where he is.

Mum and Dad are still on the farm at Brocklesby and would travel to watch him when they can wherever he plays.Great people and he is a great young bloke who I've known since he was 12.I don't see the money as being an issue for him and I believe he'll stay at the Saints.

i can assure that it is sydney making the offer and not brisbane

last week andrew maher on sen said and i quote "it is not just carlton making an offer there is a team north of albury and not as far as brisbane who have made a substantial offer"

But it doesn't matter the fact is that we have no way of getting him, the only way we could get him if we had an early draft pick to offer and we have no way of getting one. remember nathan brown was traded for pick 7 (i think....) we have no one in the class of brown who wants to leave . the only player we could trade who would get us a pick in the top 3 is adam goodes and that isnt going to happen. So the only way i could se it happening would be for the swans to trade something along the line of


(1st round pick) maybe 16 or something, leo barry and jason saddington, the saints have an obvious concern in defence, most clubs realise that it takes at least a year to get back to top form after a knee reco. But the fact remains, do we really want to give up so much for a player who has been so injury prone.

Ottens last year went for 2 first round draft picks.....koschitske is clearly a more exciting prospect and the saints are going to want heaps for him

The only way I can see anything happening is if carlton refuse to give up any of their first 2 picks, then we have a chance. Stkilda won't want to give up kosi to carlton in the preseason draft. If this happens I can invisage a pick 16, o'keefe, saddington type deal happening


having said that 2 things remain that will ensure we have no chance

1. HE will probably resign with stkilda
2. if he doesn't st kilda will glady give up pick 2 or 3 for him

always thought he has heaps of potential, but somehow not shining at freo. a young CHB with potential with the right coach, can be put on the straight and narrow (bbbbh) to become a true backline champion at much less than the cost of a kossi and would fit into what we need.

I think Polak is still in the developmental stages at Freo and given the wraps that were on him I think they will give him a bit of extra time...as long as they can keep him away from the pub.
