It may be that we arent really flag contenders either.
Take the last 4 games as a pseudo finals series, all against top 4 teams at the time. We won 3 (to get to the GF), but lost the GF.

On that basis, our only decent win was West Coast, and it was at home and on small ground.

We beat sliding Melbourne, but StKilda thumped them.

We beat sliding Geelong pretty well, but even Essendon beat them.

Next four games will be useful to see where StKilda are at (same for us).

Look for Adelaide to drop games against Port Adelaide and West Coast and St Kilda to drop a game against Freo in Perth. Sydney stroll casually into second place.

If that were to happen, we would only finish third even if we win every game.

Quite possible, but with our poor percentage we would have to win every game to finish 2nd now (also quite possible, but no certainty). Even then, the Crows will probably have to lose three of their last four now for us to overtake them, because of that percentage. Not kicking enough goals is really hurting - if Carlton scores at least 32 points today, even they will have scored more points than us!

Edit - beat me to it Charlie

No, we just beat three top 8 teams - all of which were in the top 4 when we played them (I think). Quite different I would have thought.

We were the away team & Melbourne have continued to go downhill since we played them.

Travel has also affected the Dees. Something that St Kilda don't seem to have to deal with - one interstate trip in 11 games to finish the season?!?

Not sure what your point is there.

                Of course.

StKilda's win over Melbourne was more decisive than our's.

We beat Geelong, but at home and they were already sliding.

StKilda smashed Richmond while we lost to them.

StKilda smashed Collingwood while we just won.

It just seems that it comes so easily here to downplay the performance of other sides and using similar arguments talk up Swans performances.

Where did I use a similar argument to talk up Swans performances?

As I said, St Kilda played bottom 8 teams apart from Melbourne - we played top 8 (top 4 at the time) teams. It's quite obviously a very different argument. Not that I was comparing us and them anyway - you did that and I followed on.

No true - I probably misrepresented your argument so I apologise. However, it does happen that this board can underplay the performance of other sides while at the same time overrating our own.

                        No worries.

I must say, the Saints run home seems to be looking easier by the minute. Their game away to Freo looks like the best chance of a loss.

This is why I think StKilda are a very good chance for top 4, setting them up for a decent run at the GF.

Can't see them missing a top 4 spot from here but hopefully they'll still lose a game giving us an opportunity to grab 3rd.

As far as the GF goes, it's really hard for Victorian sides to make it without coming top 2 IMHO. They are generally poor interstate and St Kilda in particular would have trouble remembering what it's like to travel for a game.

They did well last year againt Port but still lost - and they got smashed by Brisbane. I can't see them beating the Eagles at Subiaco - might be a chance against Adelaide though.

I don't see our game last night as particularly meaningful from a finals perspective. A few people have said (can't find relevant comments now to quote, so I'll put my comment here) that on the basis of last night they wouldn't mind facing Adelaide in finals. To some degree last night is a bit irrelevant if we face them again in finals.

So, when discussing a potential finals opponent, playing that exact same opponent on the exact some ground is not relevant? Just a few hours ago in another thread you mentioned a Hawthorn match from 6 years ago when someone mentioned Rd 22?!?

OK, you are going to have to explain it to me.
