Have just checked the list and in fact Nicks is the 39th player. So his retirement does not free up a place on the list.
Add Vogels and we currently have 40 on the list.
Even if Maxfield plays on he frees up a place on the list because he is eligible for the Veteran's list. So either way Nicks and Maxfield equals Vogels...so three others have to go.
As you all probably know we have to draft a minimum of three players.
I can't imagine that James can be kept on the list. As for Powell, well if he's better than Campbell, Hayes and Grundy why would you de-list him...unless you thought that a kid at pick 50 something is going to be better? Of course if one of those rookies is better then elevate and de-list...but then you still have to de-list anotyher player anyway!
Sunny won't have suddenly lost talent and height for having a year off and a year in the 2s so it's difficult to see what would be gained by de-listing him.
After the shellacking I gave him following the richmond game, Ball has lifted his game, but I reckon he's lifted it for one final surge.
When you show as much potential as Fixter did you get one more shot at a full pre-season...but he could be de-listed because there is no way anyone would pick him up...ie he'll be waiting at the end of the draft if we want him back.
Maybe if Shaw is as good as everyone says then Ericksen's place might in jeopardy.
We face the perennial problem...your own players have moew value to your team than to anyone ele's..you always get shafted if you trade them away, unless he is a gun...in which case you get shafted 'cos you have lost a gun!
For example, I would not trade O'Keefe for pick 12...I mean if you have pick 12 in the draft you would be really hoping he would be as good a player as Ryan, so what would be the point.
I would trade him for pick 1...but then no-one would give you 1-5 for him. Stalemate.
Melbourne were very lucky to get 15 for Jolly. Very lucky.
We're still shy of key backmen and key forwards and a dashing midfielder, so I would take 30 for Fosdike to pick a tall. Maybe a team with lots of young talls, like Hawthorn, would take an experienced midfielder for what would be their 4th pick.
Unlikely, though.
They'd probably ask for Moore and I'd puke!
