To the tune of Free Nelson Mandela

    Free Big Barry Hall-a
Free, Free, Free, Big Barry Hall-a
    Free Big Barry Hall-a
    Seventy-two years in captivity
    Swans and Bloods in unity
Archer and Tarrant, they walked free
Are you so blind that you cannot see

I say Free Big Barry Hall-a
    I'm begging you
    Free Big Barry Hall-a

He will plead his case to the jury
Only one man in a red and white army
Are you so blind that you cannot see
Are you so deaf that you cannot hear his plea

    Free Big Barry Hall-a
I'm begging you Free Big Barry Hall-a

Three whole years of controlled aggression
Turned his life round, da big number 1
Are you so deaf that you cannot hear
Are you so dumb that you cannot speak

    I say Big Barry Hall-a
    I'm begging you
Oh free Big Barry Hall-a, free
Big Barry Hall-a I'm begging you begging you
    Please free Big Barry Hall-a
    free Big Barry Hall-a
I'm telling you, you've got to free Big Barry Hall-a

absolutely. hall HAS performed a citeable offence.

the points system is the best idea i've seen, it just need careful adjustment, administration and explanation.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

        Sensational!

We need to find an artist and release it immediately. It would go to #1 for sure.

Don't disagree with you there either. All that I wrote was hypotheticals and how this incident would be viewed by the average AFL lover and Sydney hopeful. Hard for most to compute the punishment severity given the petty crime.

Baz was the perp here, no doubt. But a zero tolerance on this issue is like, imprisoning a South Australian model for carrying a single amphetamine to a Bali dance party.

It was said on SEN yesterday by Bruce Eva (a Saints fan) that Maguire had done his hip flexor again in the first couple of minutes into the game.

I wonder if he could claim that this contributed to the pain and was part of the reason he stayed down.

It is worry IMO that there is already talk of what the result should be based on its commercial / marketing importance, or that it's a grand final.

If Barry is fairly found guilty of an indescretion that carries a suspension penalty, then he should serve that penalty. I don't care whether he is Nigel Nobody, playing off the bench in a WAFL reserves pre-season game, or Barry Hall, playing in an AFL Grand Final as captain and arguably most important player in a team vital in terms of sponsorship dollars and national exposure. The higher the potential reward, the higher the risk.

The question here is whether he has been fairly charged or not. I believe he hasn't, so he should play. The other factors do not come into it.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

                          AGREED.

Nevertheless, there is WAY too much media furore over the whole incident, and was even before he was cited.

If it was Sean Dempster who had done it, I doubt very much that there would have been any more than a two line addendum to the match report, and it would not even have been captured by the camera.

Once it WAS Barry Hall who did it, it was open-season for the whole AFL community. Barry Hall did nothing more than what happens 20 or 30 times in the game. We've seen clear footage of Archer doing it, Voss doing it, Kosi doing it, Judd doing it, etc.

Barry Hall is a victim of his own past. Life can be cruel like that.

It was clear he was not right for the game. If such a small punch (and lets face it, it was not the worst he would have received in his time so far) felled him, he must have been previously injured. We know he was under-done going into the game, and to assume that that tap did all the damage is quite ridiculous.

No he can't. The tribunal is a separate independent body. There would be huge uproar if it leaked out that Demetriou tried to intervene.

Theory: Hall and the swans have been told he will play on Saturday. AFL is going through the theatre of suspension, then appeal, then let off to generate greater interest in Sydney at the start of Grand final week.

This sort of "News out of nothing" marketting strategy has been used by every major sport in Sydney for the past 10 years.
