The AFL does not care about senior football in NSW - they are reducing current budgets and would prefer us to be 100% self sufficient like other state despite knowing the difficulties we face.

They are only interested in the income they can generate from TV rights and therefore are happy for the junior participation rates they report to be potentially inflated.

I bet my step daughter is counted twice as a participant in the next lot of figures they release. She currently is registered at her school where some of the East Coast boys are running Auskick on Wednesday afternoons after school and is again registered at the new Harris Creek centre near Holsworthty on Sunday morning which I take her too and assist a bit.

Whilst we all want increased funding and real support the fact is its not going to happen - the future development of senior football rests solely with the clubs and the under resourced NSWAFL.

Agree with you 100% given the current environment where clubs are just left to fight their own battles with little or no NSWAFL support (largely because that body is massively underfunded to generate growth). I'm not trying to belittling Penrith's efforts. Read my post and I am saying in 5 or so years (i.e. todays 10 - 14 year olds). I am also saying with huge AFL investment.

With AFL getting into the local schools in a big way. With the Junior Clubs (St Clair, Rooty Hill, Hills Lions etc) being expanded and new ones created. With genuine investment in the new clubs and existing ones for infrastructure and advertising/admin support. With proper business planning.

The negativity comes from years of pushing you know what up hill unfortunately.

This is why I'm a fan of GWS, because it will bring a heap of people resources into the region which will hopefully filter down into the local scene over time.

I agree with your premise that with the right plan and investment things could be fast tracked, but as you also point out HQ is vastly underfunded and I don't think this will change too much.

The $200 million that everyone is so fond of referring to is going to overwhelmingly go towards subsidising revenues for the AFL club over the first ten years of its existence. Afterall, it's going to be competing with the Collingwoods of this world who turn over $60 million per annum.

I wonder how much will be devoted towards improving things at the grassroots, and you can be sure that 100% of that money will be aimed at the kids.

Perhaps Team GWS/AFL should have a look at the South Sydney area where we have the fastest growing junior team in the country (Maroubra) plus Moore Park juniors. New senior club also in the wings too apparently.

The new senior team is a bunch of late 30s early 40's blokes who have decided to take their social games to the next level - As for the fastest grouwing junior team in the country Ill take your word for it but Id imaging you have a fair share of expats living there with their kids involved - fact is people generally dont relocate from other states to live in the western suburbs - I ended up in the Shire for example - a guy I went to school with ended up working with Unilever whilst I was there and was based in Minto yet he lived in the Eastern Suburbs and played with UNSW.

That maybe true but they can also play a bit & i reckon will go well.

Also it now gives a pathway for the kids from the junior club(Maroubra) to have somewhere to go instead of UNSW/ES.

Mate the Armstrong Medalist this year is 41 and was on one leg due to a crook knee but still goes alright - never said old blokes cant play - from all reports Craig Bradley is still running rings around the young blokes at Carlton and he's well into his forties now.

This is the absolute crux of the argument.

It's very rare that we get a player move from interstate and play with us, predominately our new players are guys who have seen the game on tele and think it might be fun to have a run.

Some hang around but most don't.

Compare that with a club like UTS who would have a handful of students and the rest interstaters. They've done a great job over the last ten years no doubt but it's not as though they've got to battle for guys to walk in the door who know how to kick a footy.

I expect that Nor-West and Moorebank would be in a similar boat to ourselves, although they have the advantage of being able to draw on services blokes.

The guys from Wollongong and Campbelltown would also have an understanding of the impediments of distance, but at least they have Premier Division football to offer.

It's no co-incidence that the strongest clubs are generally the closest to the CBD, it's just a fact of life, but hopefully with more resources down the track it will make it easier for others to compete.

Dale Holmes addressed the crowd that gatherered at Gipps Rd for the "turning of the sod" in 2008 with a very definate "This is the hub of Sydney West." Forget anything more Western !
After all, the opening ceremony at BOP was the "Blacktown Mayoral Shield" between none other than Ashfield and Pennant Hills

Pete, Rosedale was purpose built for AFL NOT cricket - first and foremost it was for Australian Rules Football. The land was donated by Leo Sullivan - I have a large team photo at home dating back to the 1940's with Leo (club captain) football in hand on Rosedale.

I dont know why you needed to take a swipe but look around - both Blacktown and BP are also cricket grounds and were built in conjuction with Cricket NSW were they not.

Also isnt the home of our game actually a cricket ground?

I actually wouldnt be surpised if Rosedale is the only senior ground in Sydney that was built with only AFL in mind but am happy to be corrected.

I don't think I am being naive and I agree with your last post almost 100% (excpet for me being naive). I agree that this can ONLY happpen with the AFL and Team GWS really devoting time and money to the senior aspect of Sydney football. New clubs simply don't grow on trees

If they don't then nothing much will change except a small flow on effect. I hope it does but your forecast view is probably more likely unfortunately as I share your view re care factor the AFL has re senior footy.

And the irony, IMO, is that they do ignore the senior side they will never get the footy culture in GWS to make an AFL team prosperous long term.
