    UPS n DOWNS 2012

Now that the season is done n dusted, let's have a look at who'll be promoted and relegated. It's quiet at work.

Div 1 - no promotion for Manly to Prems? Would eliminate the bye, and probably still out of their depth, although, would be thereabouts with UTS I reckon.

Penriff to come up from Div 2. They could go alright, they've set themselves up well over there. UNSW/ES finished equal last in Div 1, but with their 3s coming up to Div 2, they can't be dropped, so the famous road trip to Towradgi drops back a grade.

Div 2 - Penriff up from D2, deservedly. Best team all year. Gull's all conquering Dogs come back to Div 2, while Camden are going back to Div 3, potentially with some success to come their way, if they keep their playing group together. Gong drop back from D1.

Div 3 - Dogs go up again, but should hold a better account of themselves than 2010. Camden added. Moorebank 2s come up. North Shore to drop back if they field a thirds, and Mac Uni already have a team in Div 4 so 2nd last can't go back, which leaves CAMPBELLTOWN! Wow. Premier & Div 4. That can't be good, but they are the rules I guess.

Div 4 - Moorebank up to D3 after a solid GF win. Auburn drop to Div 5. Power up to Div 4?

Anyway, should be another even year I reckon, hopefully see Gosford in a division somewhere.

        Based on logic not sources.

SU and ECE move from D1 to PD due the their senior teams competing in the NEAFL and with no new teams being promoted to PD we should see an 11 team comp in that Div again and the same with Div 1 which means that Penrith and Balmain being the two likely candidates to move up.

That leaves 3 promotions to Div 2 and possibly 4 if Div 2,3,4 become 11 team competitions

I heard on the grapevine that ECE were keen to push their 3rds from Div 3 to Div 1, giving them NEAFL, PD and D1. You'd think for the sake of stronger depth they'd do something similar to that, perhaps SUni would follow suit, although they have plenty of grades to mix about.

And please, logic? I don't subscribe to that!

Penrith and Parra to Div 1 with Su to stay in Div2 as they dont believe they will be competitive in Div1

So, break it down for me and others in division form.

Div 1 - (Hypothetically, with ECE & SU staying in D1)

              Manly
              Warriors
              ECE
              Power
              Sydney Uni
              UTS
              Shore
              Penno
              UNSW/ES
              Gong
              Wests

Makes 11 if no-one goes up, or down. Add Riff, Balmain as you mentioned, 13. Parra as well? 14.

Div 2 (Based on top 3 going up)

              Syd Uni
              Nor-West
              Auburn
              St George
              Manly
              Moorebank
              Camden

7 teams. UNSW up, 8. Perhaps Saints & Power jump up to make it 10?

I have heard Gosford are lucky to field a team in the Black Diamond League. They had to merge with Woy Woy in order to have enough numbers for a 2's side and even this was unsuccessful. There is no way they would be able to field a team in Sydney.

Maybe the pressure will be off them to field only one team, in say D3 or D4, for them to rebuild and move back up. Saved our asses years ago, same for Moorebank, look how strong they are now.

This whole promotion-relegation is an annual shambles. Surely the league can put some guidelines in place so we all know where we stand.

Re Div 1 surely Gong Down - Riff up is the logical outcome. Let Balmain and Parra battle it out next year for the right to come up.

MP the prob is that SU and ECE going to the NEAFL now sees their 1st Divs moved to PD which creates two positions without relegation. My mail is Penrith automatically with SU knocking back an op to take their div 2 team to div 1 and Parra are moving to Div one. How true about Parra and SU I dont know but thats what some of my players have been told from a Parra souce.

I think that thanks to the NEAFL and a few teams like SP entering more teams there will be plenty of movement this year.

Div 1 is anyone's guess - my guess is that Penrith will go up, Illawarra will go down, SU won't field a Div 1 team and the division will play 10 teams and no bye. But time will tell.

The rumour mill tells me that Under 18s nominations are high enough that they're considering having three competitions.

Don't spread those rumours, Norris. From another thread, the pathway programme has killed the 18's comp, so one would be led to believe.

Hopefully Penrith will be accepted in Div 1. Time will tell but it is where the club should historically be after 30 years of operations. I can see arguments that it return to a 10 team comp, but I think they will stick to 11 and the Gong might get a reprieve if Sydney Uni or East Coast decide that their 3rd side mightn't be up to Div 1 at this stage. Be interesting if Balmain or Parra ask for promotion. Parra would be the logical one as no-one ever seems to know what tricks the Dockers have up their sleeve. Nor-West and Moorebank should go well in D2. The Jets are building a good culture and seem closely knit, especially if there is a bar closeby, whilst the Pies have the benefit of a few years of having 18's come through the ranks.
The Goaford rumour is interesting. Sure they struggled in their local comp, but maybe they will be able to attract a few players that want to play in a Sydney based competition. Usually, Central Coast residents aren't afraid to travel and a day on the coast a season for Sydney clubs isn't that daunting.

Surely not! That's a massive gap from their ones to twos if that's the case.
