True Supporters/Fans - Your definition

To answer the question as truthfully as possible, a true supporter, IMO, is anyone who makes the time and effort to watch the game every week be it on tele or at the ground. That's enough for me. If you barrack for the Swans and then actually arrange bits of your life to see them, then you count as far as I'm concerned.

Now you can then get to various gradations of how hard core a fan you are......

My wife is a St. Kilda supporter who has been badly infected by the Bloods of 2005....found herself going "yes" at the tele in the 4th quarter of the prelim (I was at the game) and got a bit perturbed.

Anyway what with an 8 month old and other various things she doesn't even bother to watch the Saints when I have turned the tele on to them...keeps going "shall we watch that Cold Case we've got taped?" so she doesn't qualify as a footy fan even though she is a member.

Im actually a great fan of the umpires - I find myself screaming out comments like "great decision" "good umpiring" and no-one else joins in? am I all alone out there?

05-Jul-1998 Swans defeated Freo at Subi. I was a few metres around from the umpires' race so I scooted over and gave them a boo with the Freo supporters. They giggled like schoolgirls.

There are varying shades of true fan, but I feel it's a pretty simple equation.

True supporters = Total supporters - bandwagon jumpers.

Well it comes down to defining both 'True' and 'Supporters' (which is very different from 'fans' IMO).

Personally, I consider a 'supporter' as someone who does something to 'support' the team. It can range from simply watching the game (even in part) and wanting them to do well, through to excessive spending on merchandise and bequeething your entire life savings to the club. Nevertheless, denying your support of the team any time you are challenged (a la Judas) is a definate way to lose the 'supporter' title.

To me, being 'True' just means sticking through the thick and thin. It means not switching a team, and being a member of only one club. This is as in 'true and sure', and therefore bandwagon jumpers who desert the club in the bad days cannot count themselves as 'true' supporters.

My dad was 4 when the swannies won in 1933. He's watched or listened to every game since. I'm the same and go to all Vic games plus usually fly to Sydney with my kids once a year. My wife believes football dictates the mood in the house for the week! (She hates Footy but is relieved when the Swans win!) She said our holiday last year in the week before the Grand Final was wrecked by our obsession about whether BBB Hall would get off. When footy decides how the reast of your life will be, I think you are a true supporter!
