I made a point of seeing his first game, against Carlton in 2004. He's a member of the goal-with-first-kick club, and in that game Roosy put him in the centre square for the bounce when the game was in the balance in the last quarter.

With Willo and Davis out, I think the Esky will be in the side for the next few weeks at least.

Malceski's game on Sunday was the game that McVeigh 'wagoners have been waiting 2 years for him to play.

And I say that sadly, as I'm one of them. I haven't given up on him yet (and won't be doing so for quite some time), but I have to concede that Eski is about 3 miles in front of him in any head-to-head battle for selection right now.

To state the bleeding obvious: everything in any game decided by less than a kick, that costs the team a goal or fails to result in the team kicking a goal it might have kicked, could be said to 'cost the team the game'. In every nailbiter, there are dozens of incidents that fit that description. The relationship between a particular successful or failure in play, and the ultimate result, is simply far more easily observed in relation to events that occur in the last seconds of the game... hence the analogy with Leo Barry.

What's more important in the longer term is that it's easy to be confident that Eski will use the disappointment of the kick 23 seconds from time, to spur himself to greater achievements, rather than allowing it to crush him.

Just following up on that point, contrast the physicality of Malceski with that of McVeigh. Yes I'm being selective here, but O'Loughlin's goal came from Malceski being very physical making a strong tackle on Green to force the ball free and jumping to his feet to gather and then get a quick kick away. Contrast that with a couple of times where I saw McVeigh shy away from a contest because it was obvious there was going to be a heavy body contact element. McVeigh has been in the system long enough to not be able to use light physique as an excuse for pulling out of contests. If he did as much as say a Matty Lappin, then maybe, but the fact is he doesn't do enough to be able to decide wich contests he will and won't commit to.

Simple solution - train McVeigh as a pro wrestler. It will work the fear of body contact out of his system.
