I agree that this is a ridiculous situation. Our reserves need to be in a good comp and while I have no problems with games against Belconnon or Ainslie for example, Western Creek are clearly terrible.
So we either have to move to a better comp (I don't believe we could or should go back to the VFL) or improve the ACT comp itself.
When I played in that leaugue you used to run across (or get run over) former VFL players all the time, that's no longer the case. So why isn't the AFl pating half a dozen former players as developement officers/coaches in the ACTFL?
Alternately Dropping 'Creek and replacing it with an invitational Sydney team, a couple of ex Swans and the best youngsters in Sydney (ACT-Rams by stealth) might be a good idea.

On another note, should we be worried that Dempster, Phillips, Brabazon and Simpkin couldn't get into the Western Creek "best players"

                  Official report

There would have been some interesting matchups e.g. Vogels v Grundy or Willoughby v Schmidt.

The AFL Canberra is working to rejuvenate Weston Creek and all clubs involved in the competition are trying to assist them in different ways each week.

Was just checking the sportingpulse website and they have an interesting amendment to the Reserves

The score is now listed as:

Sydney 12-15-87 to Weston Creek 12-15-0

The percentages have been amended so that we now have the best percentage but the game is listed in the ladder as being a forfeit (FF) for both teams so we only have 8 points

Surely if the game is a forfeit it should only be Weston Creek...as the team that couldnt field a side???

Sounds like it was all well thought out by the ACTFL, perhaps Andy & Ado have been assisting?

Jeeez what a joke - how is this better than the VFL again?

No decent competition, bus trips (I believe) to Canberra and Wagga (bloody long trip), and young blokes who cant get experience against quality opposition.

No bloody wonder Schmidt, Willoughby, Moore etc aren't coming on.

BUT the VFL was costing us 200K - 300K more per year - wow, lot of money out of $20M.

Look at all the players who came on after playing in the VFL - Fosdike, Bolton, Kennelly, LRT, Schneider, Buchanan, O'Keefe and Ablett. Makes a big difference playing against physically fit and skilled footballers. This will cost us in player development in the long run.

It is a real worry Foreign Legion, but I don't think going back to the VFL is the answer at present.

What needs to happen is for the ACT & Sydney Football Leagues need to select 5 of their strongest teams each and combine to form a stronger state based league.

With the advent of these new NSW rookie players that can have to be taken by each club, you should hopefully see greater number of younger players being produced at a standard which lifts the overall level of a state based compertition.

A state based compertition would also (with the help of the AFL) attract more money to lure a better quality of player to the compertition. Something which is happening in QLD at present.

In some respects we have been lucky in the last few years that players coming out of the TAC Cup and jnr comp's in SA & WA are now closer to AFL standard than they were 10 to 15 years ago.

I don't believe it was primarily about the cost.

It was more that a maximum of 12 players were flying every week to play in Melbourne (and not training with their team mates there) while the rest played in yet another team in the SFL. The coaching staff had little control over how they were used at Port and weren't able to instill consistent game plans and team rules into them.

The standard of the competition is some cause for concern, but I firmly believe the current arrangements are better than they were under the Port alliance.

I also firmly believe it is impossible to conclude whether younger players' development is being stunted. These players aren't playing senior football because there are older, better players who aren't getting injured.

We can only conclude this is a problem if we start needing to play the likes of Schmidt, Willoughby etc who, after dominating in the ACTAFL then prove not to be ready to make the transition to AFL.
