Very poor coverage for keen draft followers IMO
i also agree with all your comments on the coverage. The graphics on the pick swaps were a bit hard to make out at times. Found it so frustrating not knowing which player bid was being made on. There should've been more info & analysis on the continual changes to the picks ordering, rather than all the padded fluff talk in between.

There was also unnecessary delays with announcing the next pick due to player interivews going overtime.

It should be a much better and informed coverage with all the complexities that have now been introduced to the Draft.

Looks a good pickup. Very good scouting by the recruiting team.

          Re Curnow

there is another layer albeit somewhat a fringe co benefit

we could NOT have a player like Curnow going to a team like the Cats and taking their list to another level

by Sydney securing Curnow we gained so much right now to be competitive again 2026 and beyond but also weakened another top4 team

the cats are in a window and we’re prepared to pay 3 first round picks for Curnow. They wanted to make it happen and were unsuccessful which stings a bit

the 2026 deepest lists for me are still
          brisbane
          cats
          pies
          swans

when injuries strike hard like they did for the swans in 2025 I suspect the Hawks and Adelaide and Suns don’t have the list we now have

anything less than top4 in 2026 and we have under achieved
"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Just read yesterday that if they knew, Its a BIG if, that King was going to go at pick 49, they would have been able to make a bid for Carmicheal.

Swans would not know what 17 other clubs were thinking. No club really knows what players other clubs are preparing to take. A lot of shenanigans goes on to hide what each club is doing.

AND it only takes one key person in another club's room, where they need more time to complete a pick swap, to say to the person on the keyboard "throw in a bid on King, we know Swans will match and we need the extra 5 minutes to complete this pick swap" and a whole years draft is blown up.

By any one of the numerous "power rankings" right up to immediately before the draft, Kyle was bid on at least 10+ places (400pts worth) higher than we could plan for and same with Carmichael. After passing Carmichael, it seems clubs couldn't be bothered forcing an early bid on King.

GWS and subsequently Dogs bids where they were meant we couldn't take Carmichael without losing King and maybe other targets.

The club has done a terrific job this trade and draft period including the rookie draft, I'm excited for what they have done.

I was wondering that myself with the benefit of hindsight. But we would've been unable to pickup Phillipou who also had slid. I imagine we would've always been able to pickup the bolter Cootee with a very late pick.

So we may be comparing the fortunes of Carmichael v Phillipou in future.

I also wonder whether us not matching the bid on Carmichael prevented any ambit bids on King.

Basically clubs knew with very little effort we would have had to drop one of the Academy Picks.

By matching Kyle, LC was the most vulnerable as we were never going to risk King.

Bitter sweet not getting LC but i doubt the club thought we would be able to bring in someone as highly rated at Phillipou

GWS were happy to make it happen, apart from being a rival, it highlights "fairness" in the system to the AFL where not all clubs can match.

Couple of media analysises of the Draft for each club. We were rated a C+ and B respectively:

The 2025 AFL Draft has been run, but which team won? ESPN's draft expert Jasper Chellappah has cast his eye over every club and handed down a grade. Who takes out the lone A+?

The reason King got to 49 is because we let him get there. Once he drifted out and was not bid on before pick 35 we had enough points to match a bid after that. So we took 2 other players and when a bid came at 49 we matched. We played the game perfectly.

There is something about Javen that reminds me of our similar pick Chad Warner years back now

there is a distinct body language of intensity and flamboyance to Jacen but a little raw on the decision making due to first reaction to take the game on.

Javen could be the surprise package and be better than our Lachlan Carmichael who may come back in a couple years anyway via a trade ?
