You don’t seriously believe that Kinnear makes the decision on who the club draft. His job is to research and prepare a dossier on all players considering to be in the top 100 in the country, including the academy. The decision who to draft is taken by the football department based on perceived short and long term needs, so if your looking for someone to blame that is where that is where the decisions are made.

Also think it is way too early to make calls on Logan McDonald, Sheldrick, Green and Dattoli.

You also conveniently ignore the fact that the club has consistently participated in the finals virtually every year meaning that the first round picks were late teens or early twenties taking into account Free Agency, Father Son, NGA’s.

I do agree with you on Dylan Stephens, but every club has one of those (eg Fin McCrae at Collingwood)

And from memory, Stephens was touted as a Josh Kelly type skillful running machine.

I also the the four you mentioned are all good prospects (and as you say, too early to tell). I think we'll see them become very good footballers over the next few years

i cant fault kinnear with most selections, you are goind to miss some. I rate him better at than current mgr ck in picking footballers and not using some maths theory as he has said before.

Pretty silly thread frankly. The same negativity could be aimed at most clubs recruiters.....add to that it's not even Kinnear who makes the final decision on who to pick as BRS328 pointed out.

Sure the club got Dylan Stephens wrong and Kinnear did take responsibility for that one.

Funny how so many pundits saw him as one of the best at his trade.....thanks for your service Kinnear.

That was some miss! You’re going to get some picks very wrong but that’s what the recruiters job entails so the odd “mistake” while understandable, should not happen too often. I don’t know how they form their choices but it’s fair to say they’ve not done well over all. These guys play a key role in bringing success for the club and I’m sorry to say they’ve not earned a flag. Needs heaps of improvement!

As Kinnear says in that podcast about 'players that got away' (8:06), "the earlier the pick, the harder it is because there's more options". The entire draft is a bit of a lottery but even more so at the top.

The only real head scratcher out of that list in the first post of this thread to me and probably all Swans fans is Stephens. I would love to know the reasons Kinnear "talked myself out of late in that draft" with Serong, after he was the clubs initial target....it would be fascinating to know what his reasoning was but he's reluctant to share that. Pity.

I always imagine that draft night, the entire Serong household waiting in anticipation then mouth spraying their drinks across the room when the Swans read Stephens name out and then collectively wondering "WTF just happened?!" Caleb's heart must have sunk.

Dean Towers was a good player. He was a meture age pick so had less time to develop. Developing in country footy and the reserves is different than developing in an AFL atmosphere
Zac was ok but made far too many kicking errors. But we knew kicking wan't a strength
Ollie played 189 games FFS. He wasn't a dud at all
Logan has kicked quite a few goals and he is still developing
Gus is not a blow out yet. He's getting there
Will Green is a ruckman. They take time to develop. There is still time yet
Jesse hasn't even had a chance yet. Spent most of his first year injured.

The trouble with staying up near the top of the ladder for so long is you never get the true Elite talent. You are picking from a group of about 40-60 players for your first two rounds. Every other bugger lower in the draft is too. It is a lottery at that stage. The bottom teams get the big picks.

To be fair. Ling had some injury concerns and we didn't address them well. His foot continually got worse until he could not e=walk on it at all. After rehab we thought it was good and the foot goes again. Out for nearly two seasons. Then something else stuffed up. He is a reasonable player in the SANFL. But injuries are still a concern. His body let him down not his talent. Can still that on occasions in the SANFL. No wonder they wanted him.

Wow. That is an impressive list, and there are around 20 premiership players in that list, albeit some at other clubs, but you cannot blame KB for that.
There is someone who should be eating large chunks of humble pie based on this.
Just shows what a great job KB has done over the years
