A few Malceski thoughts on the recent practice match against North Shore. It seems like he was most impressed with Edwards, who was influential in keeping them to just one goal.

There is a VFL practice match taking place against the Giants today. It's at Tom Wills Oval at Homebush and starts at 9.30am. I know that because I looked it up on the Giants website, to confirm my vague hunch that the VFL squad was playing another match. As far as I can tell, there's nothing on the Swans site.

Our first VFL game for the season is against Box Hill tomorrow, at the strange time of 12.35pm AEDT. Teams haven't been named yet, but Hawthorn have a shorter injury list than us, so they should have an advantage in the number of listed players. Which is often a significant factor in VFL games.

The game is being streamed via the AFL site. And in typical AFL administration fashion, the two games that are scheduled for free to air coverage on Saturday, are on at the same time.

Watching the Reserves game Vs Hawks today - on Afl.com.au not at the ground.

Our skills are woeful. The players who have been good/ok are: Ladhams, Adams, Cunningham, and Hamling. THAT is a worry. Dattoli looked ok but seems to be playing as a key forward lol.

McLean miles off it. Snell who admittedly has been crunched a few times does not seem to have progressed. Very disappointing at 3/4 time. Score 82H V 31S.

8 goal third quarter for the Hawks has decided this game. Hopefully we can fight out the last quarter and show some spirit. Not entirely surprising as Box Hill finished 2nd last year and we were a lowly 18th, but we have shown very little so far.

I have just had a look at the Reserves fixture - what bloody moron at the AFL designed that? We have TWO BYES in the first month. Really handy to keep players in form. Absolutely disgraceful.

                        FT: 16.11 v 10.11
Well we won that quarter, but overall well beaten in every part of the ground. So many turnovers coming out of defensive 50 coupled with really sloppy delivery into the forward 50. Most sequences of play seemed to result in an inexplicable Swans turnover rather than fierce Hawks pressure. THey often went to play fast handball in the corridor, but without the skills to execute.
Not sure any Swan played even adequately for 4 quarters, but here goes:
Adams got his hands on the ball a lot, but was as guilty as anyone for turnovers. Will be better for the run after his interrupted pre-season.
Cunningham looked the most likely of the seniors to get a recall. Probably needs more fitness.
Ladhams competed against 2 full size rucks. Won lots of hit-outs but very few to advantage, worked hard for 4 quarters.
Hamling competed hard all day, very solid.
Hanily was very busy across the ground, but often let down by his disposal.
Dattoli similar, but did kick a huge goal from well outside 50.
Kyle impressed me the most of the young ones, showed glimpses of powerful running and long kicking, but also decent footy IQ. Will look forward to his development.

Jesus thought that was a hard game to watch, viewed differently to you very little talent coming through and think your being very very generous with your praise - only 2 players showed anything Cunnigham and Ladhams (will face a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to suspension) Kyle is a long way off senior footy and realize Dattoli etc are coming off interrupted preseasons but boy I am not sure most of these guys would get a game with Westcoast. Then another game off next week for the VFL boys does not bode well for the chance of pushing for a senior spot.

Need some perspective for this game as it was the first real game that the side played against a worthy seasoned Box Hill. Just look at who played for Box Hill who would be in the Hawks seniors. Let's give the Swans side some space to grow as a team. Looks like Adams , Cunningham and Ladhams were their usual possession winners. Green was a late out due to falling down the stairs at MCG the night before. Unlucky!!! Still hope for Dattoli as he does have footy smarts but needs to build fitness due to earlier injury. Kyle will grow with experience as the side plays against MEN in the VFL comp. So just let's keep expectations lower until the side plays together more each week
