What's Wrong With Goodes?

I can't see any way someone could say Goodes played well tonight.

The main commentary about Goodes was that he was coming off cramped as he had to keep chasing Lonie around all night.

Not many Swans played well tonight, especially in the midfield.

Watching in the stand, and therefore without the benefit of commentary, I came away thinking that Goodes was by far the most effective Swan out there tonight. And yes, I do realise he didn't have much competition for that accolade.

I find that amazing. Up until about the last five minutes, when the game was over, he'd had only about a dozen possessions for the game while his opponent had had over 20.

yes, he was skirting the stoppages and winning effective clearances for us when the rest of our midfielders were struggling. Buchanan was another one who did ok, but the rest of our midfielders were useless.

Watching live, you don't have the benefit of possession counts. Often, especially with a player like Goodes, it can be hard to keep track of who his opponent is and what impact he is having. Also, I don't think raw statistic counts tell you much at all.

Lonie kicked two early but I don't recall thinking he killed us particularly later in the game. But then, as I noted, watching live it is hard to be aware of everything.

The thing that stood out for me about Goodes compared to most of his team mates is that his possessions tended to count for something. He won some ball in tight, his second efforts within packs led directly to him gaining a clearance, and he used the ball OK. This was in contrast to Fosdike, who may have got his hands on the ball a lot but had me holding my head in my hands with some awful turnovers.

I'm not suggesting Fosdike was the worst out there but he is certainly one that stood out as creating pressure for the Swans when there didn't need to be.

I think the saying is "One sparrow does not a summer make." Similarly one bad game by Goodes does not prove your point.

You have still not proved the stupid allegations/comments you have made against Goodes.

Statistics are meaningless, oh yeah I forgot you haven't produced any, but they can be used to prove any tin pot argument.

Sorry, GS14, but you're not helping either. Maybe, CC can't prove his alegations against Goodes, but you can't prove anything otherwise by attacking Chow-Chicken. Goodes is not playing the best of his ability lately and that is for everybody to see. The problem is that we have higher expectations of him than of for example Matthews.

How is it then that he is in the top few players in most media awards this year then? I suppose you can't let facts get in the way of a "good" story though can you.

You have to look beyond the glitz and glamour of media awards and Brownlow favouritism. These are just mere individual awards given by umpires (a great indication - not) and media personalities looking through rose coloured glasses. This is a team game and Adam has not always done the team things. Do you think I "predicted" what was going to happen last night? Goodes has always played that way, and I knew that good opposition coaches would put an attacking player on Goodes to play defensively and offensively - and it pays off with great results. However, I have yet to see anything put forward by yourself to the contrary.

Goodes has won one B & F, an award I regard as the best indication of a players worth in the team. If he wins it this year, I will eat my words, but I believe there are other players in the side who play for the benefit of the team and would be polling more votes than he at this stage.

Brownlow's and media awards are just there for the "star" player of every team, because the guys giving votes don't recognise anyone else. That's why you never see a full back winning these awards.
