    Round 17, ahh the memories

    With our round 17 match tomorrow I thought I would revisit round 17 in years gone by.

    Round 17, 1987 was the day we creamed the Bombers.

    Sydney 36.20 (236)
    Essendon 11.7 (73)

    A few records from that match:
    * Swans' biggest score (236)
    * Swans' biggest win (163 points)
    * Essendon's biggest loss
    * Biggest win by any side over a side that defeated them in the other home and away meeting between the sides in the same season (Essendon won the other meeting by 47 points)

    Arghhh 1987 ..Was in the throws of post-natal depression...that is all a bit hazy. But I can remember there were 2 Swans supporters in the Fingal Valley that year and we enjoyed that game.

        I seem to remember we scored over 200 points the week before and just managed a mere 198 points the following week against Richmond. Whilst all 3 games were at the SCG, they are arguably the hottest period in the history of the game.

        Anyone able to provide the stats on these 3 games? (goal kickers, best, individuals stats)

            We were garbage away from the SCG against a good side, as rounds 19 and 20 showed. Carlton beat us 68 at Princes Park and then Hawthorn beat us by 45 at Princes Park.

              Yeah, we cooda been 'the greatest flat-track bullies of all time', before St Kilda arguably took the mantle away from us in 2004 by being even softer: they did it indoors!

              Although to be fair, St Kilda at least won a final in 2004 (I wonder who they beat?), which is more than Sydney did in 1986/7 (or for that matter throughout the entire 1980s).

              Another interesting thing about that 'cricket score' run of matches, that shows how much footy has changed: the opposition scores were 10.11 (71) (130 point loss), 11.7 (73) (163 point loss) and 15.17 (107) (91 point loss). The first two of those scores would stand a moderate chance of beating Sydney circa 2005/6, and in about half of our games, a team that kicked 15.17 against us would give us a pretty fair touching up.

              That said: given a choice between cricket scores and grand finals, I know which one I'd take.

                  We peaked at the wrong time, as we all know after last year it's all about who peaks in form in September.

                    That Game against the Bumber in 87 was the first and only game

                    my dad ever went to. He "sort of " enjoyed it but he was

                    a Rugby League man. He still thinks its a game for "shirt lifters

                    and pooftas". No wonder I am the black sheep of my family.

                    Having Dennis Carrol out injured never helped us in 87 , plus

                    there was the theory that Tommy 'Tea Bags" ran the players

                    into the ground at training.

                      I remember Round 17 1997 when we smashed the Dogs at the SCG by 98 points. The picture in the Tele the next day was the usually reserved Paul Kelly pointing out the scoreboard to the dirty thug Liberatore at the end of the game because that was the year Liberatore used Kelly as his very own stress ball in the early clash that year. It was a sweet victory that day

                            That was a good memory, it helped start the downfall of West Coast's form toward the end of the 2005 season...
                            I only support one team: The SYDNEY SWANS!!!!! :adore

                              A good game. This game included one of the commentators using the prophetic phrase "Grand Final preview".
