No matter how 'strong' the draft, realistically what are we likely to get with pick #33 or whatever it is?

Whatever we get with #33 via the draft will most likely not significantly help us get back to the GF in the next 3 years, whatever we get with #33 via a trade is probably a better chance of significantly helping us get back. Strike while the iron is hot and what not, what, right chums?

Gotta love this quote from an artice on thr Official AFL website.

Although Pelchen said another party had also expressed interest in Everitt, he did not name which club was also keen on securing 'Spida's' services.

"Yes, we are definitely considering it (an offer from another club). It's certainly more attractive than what Sydney has put to us," Pelchen said.

"I don't want to speculate on that.

"I think it's best between the two clubs concerned at the moment."

Pelchen said if the unnamed club could come up with a better off than the Swans, then the Hawks would pounce on that deal ahead of going back to Sydney for a final offer.
So firstly he says there's 'another club' with a much more attractive offer than that of Sydney's offer, then he says IF the 'unnamed club' can come up with a better offer than Sydney, they'll pounce on it.

But hasn't Spida said he will only be traded to Sydney? If not he'll go into the PSD regardless of whether there is a better offer from anoter club or not?

How do we rate Jared Moore? Promising? Would you be willing to trade him just yet??? That's what we could potentially get with a pick around that mark - I think we got him in the early 30's.

The Hawks are being unrealistic as I have said previously and if Everitt can ask enough to scare off other clubs then all the better - Pick him up for nothing and use our picks on good young prospects.

I think that there may be enough current Ruckman looking for a new home for Everitt to be priced out of the market.

Or we could get one of the many dozens who go nowhere. Moore isn't really anywhere either and is going to be far less value to us in the next two years than Everitt!

That's just the thing isn't it? On one hand, Everitt will give us a better than even chance of being pretty good in the next 2 years. On the other hand, you have probably a 1/4 chance of picking up a kid who will be a good player.

If you look at the kids we've drafted, about half will make it to more than a handful of senior level games, let alone be a 100-gamer. Of course, this could be because in the last few years, we haven't really had a lot of very early picks.

1997: Jason Saddington, Fred Campbell, Adam Goodes, Brett Rose (one dual-brownlow medallist, one pretty decent player who we traded, and 2 duds)

1998: Nic Fosdike, Ryan Fitzgerald, Jude Bolton, Heath James, Dwayne Simpson
                    Simon Feast (2 100-gamers, 2 injury-prone and 2 hacks)

1999: Scott Stevens, Stephen Doyle, Ryan O'Keefe (1 injury prone (traded), 1 injury prone, 1 100-gamer)

2000: Luke Ablett, Amon Buchanan, Jarrad Sundqvist

2001: Mark Powell, Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Daniel Hunt, Adam Schneider, Ricky Mott

My point is that you need to assess what you need right now. We're a chance to still challenge for the flag, we should get Everitt if the price is right.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

                      Very good summation desredandwhite.

Everitt now is perfect timing for where we are as a club. We might not get another go at reaching and winning another premiership for 15 years, we need to make sure we give ourselves as much chance as possible to reach the GF and win it in the next 2 years.

I have no issue what so ever if we can secure Everitt for our second or third round selection.

We will soon know for sure one way or the other.

But one truth is certain. Hawthorn is full of @@@@ is they think anyone believes that there is another club wanting Everitt.

If it was true they would have told Everitt, who would have told us, his preferred club.

                          It will be interesting.

I guess hindsight is 20/20... and in about three years time... when this years draft selections come to the fore... we'll know whether or not we made the right decision (Regardless of what decision we do make)....

But if the draft this year is as strong as everyone says it is, I think we need to keep our draft picks.

                              Ricky hits the nail!

I think Ricky got it spot on in this quote!

Hawthorn told Sydney another club had offered an early second-round pick for Everitt - effectively undercutting the Swans - but the identity of the mystery suitor could not be confirmed last night.

The move triggered an angry response from Everitt's manager Ricky Nixon, who described Hawthorn's attempts to negotiate with clubs other than Sydney - Everitt's preferred destination - as a "waste of time".

"If Hawthorn doesn't want to do a deal with Sydney they will miss out," Nixon said.

"If Jason Akermanis is worth a second-round pick, why is Spida suddenly worth a first-round pick? If they value him so much, why didn't they offer him a two-year deal? There needs to be a reality check at Glenferrie Oval."
