That is Mitzy. Used to be in the Cheer Squad in Melbourne in his younger days. His claim to fame is making two banners in a row for players who ended up leaving the Swans the very next year (Shannon Grant & Stephan Carey). He didn't make another one after that.

I'm not begrudging your choice to watch it. I have no issue with people who enjoy it for what it is. I don't get why people watch a half-assed sport just for the sake of watching some sport. I'm just stating that I don't find it much of a game.
Weird you say that. To me the Port match in London is what I'd define "half-arsed". These matches (despite the constant negative publicity) are often very firey. Which to me is part of their appeal.

I actually really enjoy watching it. To be brutally frank as a supporter of both Aussie Rules & the World Game I find the IR concept a weird kind of hybrid between the two. The goalkeepers (and seeing how our boys will go with that), the square pitch. As a bit of an overseas culture vulture it gives you a window into another country & its sporting culture. That is enough alone to keep me interested in the concept (even if I find that I tend to enjoy the matches in Ireland more for the very above reason.)

To be brutally honest I enjoy the style of footy in the IR a lot more than I do watching many AFL matches these days. People have to try and keep the ball in, so the ball stays in play heaps more & teams cannot try and adopt defensive tactics to try and keep getting the ball out of play. The ball being round means that the bounce is sounder. Meaning players can approach the ball with a far greater sense of surety, even if kicking the pill appears the require a completely different technique that it does kicking a Sherrin.

Those Irish guys are so fast with the ball. The emphasis appears to be on quick & skillful use of the ball rather than brute strength and defensive tactics.

I also love listening to Marty the Irish commentator. "Awww, what a moorrrrvelous score, that" He was raving on Gordon Bray style about how player being the best pastry cook in all of Ireland or something. Makes Quarterbrain come across as downright boring and ockarish in comparison.

If you don't enjoy AFL why do you still watch it, post about it and generally go on about it all the time? Sometimes I think you post this stuff for attention! You are in the cheersquad - if you don't like the sport that much then why are you in the CS?

            Ok gawd, no you too!

As a sport Australian rules Football at AFL level has NEVER been worse spectacle to watch. In my younger years I'd be watching nearly every match of the day on a Saturday. Now I find myself maybe watching the odd non-Swans match in a blue moon. Defensive tactics, teams crowding around ball ups, chipping it around to waste time (especially when getting beaten) are now part & parcel of the game these days. And to be honest, it sucks.

I recall seeing you & the other girls in your posse at several games this season saying "Ho hum, another boring Swans game."

Personally I'm passionate and attached enough to not worry about the quality of footy matches too much when the Swans are involved. I just want them to win. But it doesn't mean I'm as wrapped about watching Brisbane vs Hawthorn as I would have been 10 years ago.

Seriously, watch a game from say the late 80s and see how different it is to the keeping-offs footy we play today. The IR series is a little more like the footy we saw in the 80s-fast, free-running & constantly flowing.

Our "posse" will happily say that the Swans gameplan can be boring, and we've been known to sing songs to that effect. But in good humour and we still love the game.

And FYI, I grew up watching the game in the late 80s. I can appreciate both types of football and I've always watched every game every weekend and probably always will.

The difference is that although I find the Swans style boring at times (and against certain opponents), I don't publicly complain about it and it doesn't change the fact that I think that aussie rules is the greatest sport there is - I would never write about how I don't enjoy it on a forum!

Its just an observation, if I am one of many making the same observation maybe its because its true ....

Poor comparison. The games you choose to watch from the 80's were probably the best games of that time.

I bet your 80's collection doesnt include a mudbath at Moorabin between the dogs and the 'aints.

Overall the standard of AFL is little changed from the 80's. The 80's may have had a few more highs, but also a ew more lows.
