So what if he got away with it or if people turn a blind eye because its so small? What's to stop a player then increasing the bet as his confidence grows that he can get away with it? The AFL (much as it pains me to say) has to stamp this down, just like they did with Justin Charles and his 'roids and, going back a long time, to the Bribery Scandal of 1910 when Lang and Fraser were suspended for 5 years each.

I'll say again that I don't want to see KJ booted out of the game, but this is a very serious breach that deserves more then just a slap on the wrist.
Sure, but name the player for two $5 bets?

Educate, discipline, hit over the head, whatever, but why shame a player for two small bets?

Gambling is actually legal in this country, drug use isn't, but the AFL is pretty happy to protect drug users. He breached the code, at a very low level, no one except him and the club needed to know about it.

To me, that is the entire issue.

It's almost un-Australian not to have a flutter.

        Absolute storm in a teacup.

If players are found to have bet on games they are involved with, it is a different story, that's not just having a bet, it's then possible collusion, match fixing etc etc. But to hang a bloke out to dry for what may have been no more than a $10 bet on Goodes to win the Brownlow is total BS.

It's a bit easier to fix a match than it is to fix the Brownlow. Umpires betting on the Brownlow would be a pretty major problem.

The AFL is also a little compromised on this issue. If gambling (particularly on football) is such a no-no, then why accept (relatively) large sums of money from the gambling industry? I?ve heard the figure of $600,000 p/a from the TAB mentioned. And why actively promote gambling providers and their services (ie Tatts TipStar and TAB Sportsbet) on the Official Corporate Partners page of the AFL website?

The brownlow means nothing according to some on RWO,so who cares if they bet on it then.

No one is saying turn a blind eye, but all he needed was a serious warning.

Jack has just been reprimanded for his actions, escaping a fine - as imposed on Ward and Goodwin (and suspended fine on Hale).

Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

The picture of Jack in today's Tele had him looking like a 12yo - I'm surprised they let him into the TAB unsupervised.
