Roos takes credit for Goodes' Brownlow

One things Roos will not accept is that the growing list of individual accomplishments - the eight All-Australians, Goodes's two Brownlows - are an indication he has traded his famed Cortinas for a fleet of Lamborghinis. On the contrary, he claims the individual recognition is reward for players who have stuck to the team plan.

Same old same old from Roos and his media side-kick Hinds. While Hinds is one of he better AFL writers in the Sydney press (when writing about other clubs) he is very lazy when it comes to the Swans. He sits at the feet of Paul (or likes to give the impression he does - he probably has the press release, containing quotes emailed to his desk (or did Roos say all those thing in the latest Swans magazine?)) and regurgitates without analysis or criticism.

The best thing about it was some public recognition that Fosdike was BOG in the 2005 Grand Final.

Oh, and the nod to RWO - or did he come up with the Dancing with the Stars quip by himslef? Maybe Crouchy goes round to Paul's place to watch it when the boys go out on the town?

I'm a bit unsure of what you want Roosy to say ROK?

"Yeah, these blokes are bloody ace - we should siht it in if they all rack up good individual stats." Can't see that working too well. I thought the Fosdike/Kirk/Goodes reference was a tremendous analogy, albeit only a 5 point swing. Also remember a great individual performance by Barry Hall kicking 7 this time last year and we lost to Essendon of all teams.

Of course he's managing the sitation because he has to, for them and the supporters. That's what a coach does - focuses the team's mentality towards a single mindset by making them worthless as individuals (performance not character), yet forging the idea that they're untouchable as a synchronised unit, with each playing their role. It's exactly the same in the army. Even a lone champion's effort like Ablett in the '89GF couldn't deliver the cup.

Recognition that Goodes, Hall, O'Keefe et al are champions, and that they would be champions (or at least could be champions) outside of the "team plan". There is never any recognition from Roos that anything is achieved outside of his influence. Yeah, they are champs because they do as he instructs but we have all seen how crap the game plan is when the players are not up to speed, when skill levels are down. Remember the Adelaide game last year? But then it was the players fault. The game plan - the team plan - relies more on champions for its efficacy than the players rely on the game plan for their champion status.

I don't want Roos to @@@@ in their pockets but I would love to hear him say something along the lines of "Goodes is a champion player. He thoroughly deserves any accolade that befalls him. He has earnt it and is a credit to himself and the club". Something like that. Something that lets him out of the Roos context for 5 minutes, not to heighten his status as an individual away from the team but simply to recognise that he is a champion. Seems that players will only be treated differently when they do something wrong?

Maybe his keeping a lid on things? Ever thought of that? I have read and listened too Roosy give Goodes and the rest of the boys praise many times! Maybe he is into the team as a whole rather than take the FIGJAM approach ala Nathan Buckely. IS that what you want?

Does he need to be a 3k a week coke user for you to finally leave him alone like with Ben Cousins?

I can't find the article, but Roosy has stated in the past month that Goodes is only just getting started and could well win another Brownlow. He's not shy of handing out compliments, but he's quick to douse them when he feels the hype might no be in the best interests of the team. It's not for Roosy's glorification sake; it's to get the best performance on the field - which for the players, the club, the coach and the supporters is the TEAM winning.

The plan has arisen from the interaction between all the coaches, all the players and dare I say it all the football departments as well. The coaches and players have put their trust into a system - a not too flexible system, for better or for worse - that likes to emphasize collective achievement (and collective responsibility). Might not be your cup of tea, ROK, but that's how the best systems work in pretty much anything in life.

Well the important people who matter respect the way Roos works and thats the players and staff. Who cares what one person on a forum has to say eh!

After he won the Brownlow, Goodes said he valued the club champion more because individual awards don't sit well with him, and the club champion is recognition from his peers.

ROK, I read this a bit differently. It seems to me that Hinds disagrees with Roos over the individual talent, and that the reference to the hose at the end means that Hinds is aware of Roos' wish to keep the team under the radar as much as possible.

I continually shake my head at the constant sniping at Roos from a couple of people on these boards. If we were underachieving or the team was in disharmony I'd understand it. But we're in the middle of a sustained period of success for the club at a time when it's genuinely exciting to be a Swans supporter, esepcially for those of us who were fans when we weren't so flash.

Roos can claim credit for whatever he wants while we continue to perform as we have been. For the record, he has done an outstanding job with Goodes IMO, and I think he does deserve some credit for the way he has brought him along.

I couldn't agree more. I don't understand why the same people seems to be constantly sniping the team. Its like they will only be happy when the club is in a crisis and its the same people too! These are the same people who will no doubt question the club and have a whinge when we will finally go through a rough patch. It just doesn't make sense to me why they keep doing it?

Eade had some trouble finding a set position for Goodes to play if I recall. It wasn't until Roos was at the helm that Goodes flourished as a star. That does say a lot about how good the coach is.
