This has been very clear in recent discussions, particularly this one without hearing Selwood's side at all.

The problem with this whole thing was that he was deemed guilty before any evidence could be provided. The comments,if said, were disgusting and no rational person could justify them. but we should make sure that due process is observed before we hang a guy.

I think some here are under the delusion that the decision tonight makes him innocent. In fact, that's is exactly what one is harping on about....

Anyone that sledges someone's family is going to get biffed now. Great advantage for blokes with kids.

Seems to have set a precident. Anyone who gets suspended could claim extreme provocation and since Headland's been cleared they would have to get off. I mean the AFL has and is always consistent...isn't it!!??!!

Haha, classic! Now in light of the Headland penalty being cleared....I guess he was innocent of striking!

The whole way this has been handled is a debacle.

When someone makes an accusation of racial vilification, they are not allowed to comment on the incident to the media, nor is anyone connected with them allowed to do so. The incident goes to mediation.

Presumably this is done to protect all involved from exactly this situation until it can be confirmed whether there is agreement that the vilification occurred and/or whether there is any corroboration.

Why did this same process not operate here - not necessarily the mediation (although that would have merit in this situation)- but certainly an embargo on any public comment until it has been established that someone has a case to answer?

The framework is in place. IMO the AFL urgently needs to extend it to cover all charges of verbal abuse to ensure there is never a repeat of this very sorry situation.

Regardless of whose version of events was closer to the truth - or indeed if both players were telling the truth from their perspective - two players have come out of this with their reputations tarnished and that ain't good for anyone, or for the game.

I don't know what everyone is on about. NOTHING happened in that incident (in fact, there was no incident!). Selwood didn't say those things, and Headland didn't strike him. It is all a figment of everyone's imagination.

AFL will eventually dig themselves into a giant pit and won't get out if more incidents like these occurred with even less evidence to base their judgements. I hope another Headland vs. Selwood case doesn't happen again for a very long time.
I only support one team: The SYDNEY SWANS!!!!! :adore

So he should have been found guilty because Headland says so?
