    Jolly, The Next Cox

Ok, massive statement with little basis in fact but I see some signs that Darren is having a good year getting better each week.

When Dean Cox was second fiddle to Gardiner, his skill level was modest and work ethic underwhelming. Exit Gardiner, up steps the real Cox. Athletic, powerful, busy and matchwinning.

Jolls' hitouts are second in the comp and he shares a big load with Peter. He has taken some lovely marks and converts his opportunities (loved that in-swinger against the Dees). His fitness is outstanding. It takes a fair motor to be able to leap in general play and hold onto the Sherrin.

He is running harder around the ground and dropping into holes, is confident about roaming the forward line and really has lifted to cement his place. He and Spida have a very healthy competition. I think Spida has shown him that it's for a big man to impose himself on a game. Sydney has lacked a game breaking big man since Stafford's demise and some may argue Greg was never that good either.

    Any alternative opinions?

Haha....he'll probably be delisted at the end of next year after the stafford comparisons.

He had his chance to step up last year with the destroyer exiting stage left. Toiled pretty well until babygate, but never really had a huge impact. Still has the occassional doozie (see 4th qtr fumble vs roos) but no doubt has the scope for improvement. Seems to be switched on again, which he certainly didnt seem to be earlier in the season.

What about the one he dropped in defence against the Roos which led to a goal

I think it was Gerard healy who commented that if he wants to be an elite ruckman those are the marks he needs to swallow.

Still a long way to go before he's as good as Big Cox IMO.

I don't want to pump up his tyres too much. But I believe the Jolly/Spida combination is actually working better than the Ball/Jolly one used to. Early days. But the signs are very good.

I agree. Too bad our midfield stinks.

I suspect Jolly will always be just a GOF.

Which really goes to the core of our bad form at the moment.

Still haven't forgiven him for that effort on GF day last year....

Though he's playing well enough at the moment that I wouldn't drive across 6 lanes of traffic to run him down... two yes, six no..

Notwithstanding, if he plays a few blinders, and carries us through to another flag, all will be forgiven....

Actually there are 2 that contributed to Jolly's poor GF in 2006.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

I must say Big Jolls has stepped up this season so far, his kicking for goal has improved & evidence was shown when he kicked 2 goals against the crows a few weeks back. In the past, playing Jolls up forward wasn't always a good thing because of his awful kicking & how he was reading the ball but so far his been taking alot of good grabs & seems to be very comfortable with his partner in crime ( Spida).

Hopefully he can improve even more & become a 'real' challenge for big cox once we meet the weagles again

Totally agree. This is the best test for me. The Swans have been destroyed everytime we've faced Cox in recent years. We've won games despite their dominance in the middle. But no combo in the ruck has even gone close to a 50/50 on the day. Ball, Jolly, Doyle, Chambo, Goodes - no combination has been able to stop Cox. Heck Cox with Lynch in support still beat us one year.

I'm hoping when we play them next time, though, that we'll have finally improved in this area.

Even worse of course was being beaten last time WITHOUT Cox.
