RutB is obsessed with Mathews - it's pretty much all he ever posts about - but only to 'defend him' not to comment on his game (or pretty much any other aspect of the game).Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

I am very pleased that the endeavour is back. It was demoralising seeing the effort in the previous 2 weeks, especially when we saw them live.
Those on this forum who are holier than thou, who cannot enjoy a win and want half the team sacked, demoted and Roosy incarcerated in Guantanamo need to get a life!!Last weekend in Sept 05 - The best weekend of my life!Comment

I didn't see the game (thanks to Channel 7), however, by all accounts my two favourite whipping boys, McVeigh and Mathews performed well.
McVeigh has a lot of good work to do for the rest of this year to justify selector's faith in him. I still hold the view that he does not have the physical attributes of an AFL player and nor does he possess compensatory abilities such as vision, knowing where to place himself etc. Mathews is having a good season, which I think is great.
The Port game was a critical test and we came through with flying colours. I am more optimistic about the season ahead, than I was last week, but our reliance on Kennelly is troubling and I fear for the next few years should we continue not to rotate new players through the team on a regular basis.
Now for this week's big test...He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.Comment

IMHO, McVeigh was still crap. Yeah he kicked a couple of goals but that hardly exonerates him for every other game this year and his barely par performance yesterday. Though I do sincerley hope that it does spark him into some decent form for the remainder of the year. He's just been so disappointing in comparison to last year.
As for Benny boy, I though he was pretty good yesterday as he has been all year since coming back. He did have one shocker where he turned it over in their fwd line that resulted in a goal, but he's other good work probably means he's still in front.
Dempster was piss poor. Far to clumsy and got shown his ass by every player he was assigned. Just goes to show how much we really do miss LRT.
Kennelly was awe inspiring and helped the Eski work his way into the game. Though reasonabley quet in the 1st half, Eski stormed into the game in the 2nd and made a big impact in the end.
I was very pleased to see our disposal improve so dramatically. One sequence of play in the last qtr when Kirk took the mark right on the line started a chain of about 15+ handballs through the centre, on the run, and under a bit of pressure as well. All the handballs were effective, hit their target and we started playing instinctive footy again. Can't recall whether it was Davis that dropped the long bomb through or MOL crumbed it, but it was a beautiful sequence of play either way...
Sensational stuff! Let's see more of it this weekend!Comment

After a slow start, I thought he worked into the game well.
Some of his trademark kicks out of the HB line which clear the HF line were just fantastic. Normally guys like Davis and ROK just hang back and let their opponent take front position in those plays because they are aware Dempster can kick it well over 60 in those circumstances. Invariably they just double back, take the ball and stream in towards 50.
People are lenient on Tadgh and Eski re: defensive work. Their opponents can often get a fair bit of the ball, especially in rebound situations from turnovers. But they repay that in spades by creating and offering so much in attack that the defensive lapses are tolerated and so they should be.
I see Dempster as very similar, not as creative, but certainly capable of running lines and launching attacks.Driver of the Dan Hannebery bandwagon....all aboard. 4th April 09Comment

He did launch a massive bomb from just outside of 50 to a leading Davis in the 3rd quarter. Must have carried about 60+... It was a great kick..
But still think he was far to clumsy... Gave away a few pretty average frees as well IIRC....Comment

As for Pearce v McVeigh, well Pearce is a receiver. Whilst the likes of the Burgoynes are being shut down he will receive far less of the ball. It was probably more due to those players being shut down, rather than good work on the part of McVeigh.
I thought he was fairly average again, although he did kick a couple of goals. He is the sort of player that looks a little better in a team that is playing well. Would look pretty ordinary in a Carlton or Richmond side for instance.
We still have a lot of work to do. We were clearly beaten in the clearance and inside 50s. Our main ball winners were our half back line rather than our midfielders, they are still not taking advantage of our great ruck combination.
If we sort that part of our game out, we'll step up another gear.Comment
