    Mathews is a liability

before people start jumping on me as i know he's a favourite of some, please, please tell me last time he was either in the best, did something memorable or comprehensively beat his opponent on any given day.

We were 2 goals down with all the running on saturday until Ablett kicks the sealing goal with Mathews trailing 3-4 metres behind.

Who in the team would be considered to have played a worse game on Saturday than Benny?

John Barnes on K-Rock asked the question in the 3rd quarterof what was different between mathews and the rest of the swans on Saturday?
    The answer was "He's clean"!!

Two or three of his fifteen or so opponents this year have had quiet games.

Ummm, that's it. Truly. Half an entire season and that is the ENTIRE "pros" column.

I reckon he's been better this year than the last two. He's a hack though, no doubt about that.

No doubt he's been bad at times... But not this year.

Even last week, when that goal was kicked.. "The sealer", was it exclusively Mathews fault that they were 8 goals + down at half time?? I think not.

Benny did a pretty good job of quelling a great player in great form. He has done so all year as well.

As for paying any credit to what Barnes has to say on of all stations K-Rock, well forget it. Unless he's selling honey on the sideline at half time in one of his "sticky moments" , I wouldn't be paying any attention to what he has to say.

His opponent had 23 touches, kicked 2 goals and was just about B.O.G.

And he probably would have got 40 touches and kicked 8 if McVeigh had of played on him!! Yeah it wasn't he's best outing for the season, but he's going OK. Not sensational. Just OK.

Ablett Jnr is in great form at the moment and limiting him to this is a fair effort.

Especially considering what an insipid performance it was by the ENTIRE team in the 1st half.

Seriously did you watch the game?

I think Mathews is one of the few who Roos has hinted will be dropped.

Also, most tagers these days get possessions themselves - Sewell, K Cornes, Kirk, Rawlings etc etc. Not only do these players shut down their opponents, they also get possessions. Mathews did neither on the weekend.

Yeah he would've killed McVeigh, but he's ordinary too.

I can't believe anyone could suggest that he was even OK on the weekend. He was woeful in my opinion.

Yep... He didn't have a good game. No doubt.

And yes, agree with all of that. He needs posessions himself.

Point is, he's been far from our worst all year. Up until that game (In which he was beaten soundly), he'd been a pretty handy contributor. And remembering that he's a "stopper", not a ball winner, I'll let him slide on this occassion. But that's up for review again next Monday!

I'm generally not a player bagger, but I do get 'oh no' thoughts when Benny gets the ball..it's so often taken to ground resulting in HTB or the (slow) disposal leads to opposition possession. However , he does get some of the toughest opponents and I think his rate of keeping them to fewer possessions that others would is acceptable...esp in the light of lack of experienced defenders to replace him.
Having said that, if Roos could find an equally effective defender with faster reactions and some attacking nous, I would be happy to see Benny have a run in the 2s.

Do we think it will be Benny, Jarrad or Tim?
