Still not convinced about Mathews v Cornes - will have to go and dig out my tape. But have just looked up details of that match and Cornes got 23 possessions, kicked a goal (though that was a soft free and maybe against Kirk, not Benny) and was named as Port's second best (behind Ebert). Mathews got about 16. I realise that stats, and even 'best player' lists can be misleading, but on their own they don't support your assertion that Mathews flogged Cornes all day.

Similarly against Dal Santo (who we both recall was Mathews' opponent), Mathews got 6 possessions and Dal Santo 16 (plus a goal). So again, hardly convincing evidence of a flogging. As I said earlier, my recollection is that Mathews did well stopping him in the first half but was well beaten in the second half,

Good on you Liz you are tenatious ! But tapes are limited in value but recomended watch again! If you could stand back from the criticism of Matthews from gets here and if really were interested and challenged by the opinions (like me) then inorder to make informed comment it takes watching VERY intently. Yes I admit I was concerned. But there is a whole thread of dribble and chunder fit for ....

Stats mean nothing! It is where and when. Study the Swans gameplan more try and understand it !.... mostly understand the whys esp the apparent -ves!

Do you lot really think Roos et al are all so stupid that they don't understand what and why Ben is doing... really?????

yay yay yay (all the desperate attempts in cyberspace) to elevate the youngsters .... good on you all....Carry on

Yep lets play Ben on their 22nd last best and put who on a top 5.. he will get Braun this week maybe not top 5 but the most "in form" player they have!

Did anyone see Ben play on Peter Bell? How did he go? Did he pass the RWO approval test that day? Gee the list of champions he has been asked to play on grows and grows! ( Oh yes Liz, ALL GAME!)

and apparently it is disgusting that the whole coaching panel and selection committee chose this "liability" to take on the oppositions best players! Pity they don't take any notice of your opinions hey! Whens the protest march on?

Yes, by all accounts Mathews played well on Bell. And this has been his best year in a long while.

                  BUT:
In a team with already bad disposal, his is some of the worst
Does not make good decisions when he does have the ball (which is rare enough in itself)
Can only play as a tagger - and - only on slow players
Is not going to get any better
Is nearly 30 in the oldest team in the league

The thing is compared to where he was 3 or 4 years ago, in terms of ball winning and ball skill (never brilliant but certainly effective), it's been a long slow downhill slide since then. As a 150+ game player he should really be able to "smash and flog" all the players in that list, and by that I mean win more ball than they do and use it better than they do, instead of just stopping them. No team can afford to carry a <5 effective possession/game stopper of the oppositions 2nd or 3rd string midfielder, and that's what Matthews has become.
Sure Bell is a champion but @ 31 years old he's a long way past his best (despite being the only Freo player with any real ticker........another story.........). Most damning of all, for someone with supposed leadership ability, is his game when we really need it, when the chips are down, when we're 3 or 4 behind and we need a life, this bloke is nowhere to be seen, even as a stopper.

I'll guess you'll be telling us next that's he's been sacrificing his game

Ok most of that makes some sense! Well done!

The question then is who has the experience & ability play on these "speedy" opposition. (I would not call Power, Del Santo, B Harvey, Bell , Ablett etc etc ...slow!?) Kirky could, but that might damage the side worse.

His performances this year have arguably been better than several other Snr Swans players (even fan favs like MOL, Davis) and certainly more consistent.

anyway just breaking up the mutual mass_debate with an alternative positive perspective see ya!

                        It does make you wonder:

How have the Swans done as well as they have over the last 3-4 years ???

And how likley is it they could do it again in 2004 ???

I wasn't having a go at your spelling..it was an attempt at yumour that didn't quite hit the mark. It's hard to get facial and voice expression into typing. My timing and delivery were perfect in my head but died in the delivery. "You're killing me here!"

p.s. I'm hopeless at anything with numbers in it.

Sorry pal no offence intended ....it was a backhander intended for someone else.

I got your "yumour" and you were spot on ! I had had a few bevies at the time and your suggested word if meant to cover both alt of meanings of "pzzed" conveyed the meaning perfectly

good match from mathews. often right in place behind the play to take the backward handball.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know
