Schneider: You Don't Know What You've Got 'til It's Gone

I'm with the lobster on this, they tried to turn him into something that that he's not; however I will clarify that by saying they tried to turn him into a "Sydney" midfielder, which he's not- he may be perfectly fine in the midfield at another club that understands you need to have some degree of attack from the midfield to counter balance all the defence (I'll give it to the Swans that last year they played a hell of a lot of games on the SCG where the attack from HBF is basically coming from the midfield for half the game anyway because the field is so short... also they've been very successful with that model AND the coaching staff I'm sure know a hell of a lot more about football and the bodies at their disposal than I do).
I don't think that sending Adam off was great for team structure, it's one less attacking guy. I took a quick scan over Scotty scotty bo botty's excellent RWO stats (great to have btw Scott, please keep it up for this year for those who don't have easy access to the print version of the Hun
) and apart from finishing fourth in our goal kicking tally (at a decent clip too) Schneider was third on the team (both in total for the year and average per game) behind Hall and MOL for combined Goals + Goal Assists; the combined averages are below for our best performers in that category.
The question isn't just "where will those 27 goals for the year come from?" (27 goals is a decent haul, certainly nothing to sneeze at and put Schneider in the top 50 for goal tally for the season) but also "where will those 28 goal assists come from?". We had 5 guys on the year that had more than 25 assists- Kirk, Goodes, Malceski, O'Keefe and Schneider (those first four received the odd bit of love around here last season too), of those 5 only Schneider backed it up with more than 25 goals. I'm not sure how many guys in the comp put up 25+/25+ last year, there was only around 50 who put up the 25 goals part and one would suspect that list would whittle down pretty quickly if we looked at their assist tally (the 3 higher placed Swans are obviously straight out).Code:Player G+A avg Barry Hall 3.4 Michael O'Loughlin 2.652173913 Adam Schneider 2.619047619 Nick Davis 2.5 Ryan O'Keefe 2.304347826
Goal Assists are an important stat (I believe they are at least) and I expect in the next few years, as the love of sporting stats grows and grows, we'll start to qualify decent players by adding comments such as "he's a 20/20 mid/hff". I'll go out on a limb and suggest that a 25+/25+ is moving into the "very good player" category.
We did need to freshen things up a little, I like the additions we have made to the team but I'm just not certain that we made the right subtractions.Last edited by stellation; 11 March 2008, 07:57 AM. Great post and an angle I had not thought about. The only thing to add is that the Swans do already rate their players by goal assists (well, B.Hall getting the 1 percenter award in 2006 for the most goal assists is a good example).I'm with the lobster on this, they tried to turn him into something that that he's not; however I will clarify that by saying they tried to turn him into a "Sydney" midfielder, which he's not- he may be perfectly fine in the midfield at another club that understands you need to have some degree of attack from the midfield to counter balance all the defence (I'll give it to the Swans that last year they played a hell of a lot of games on the SCG where the attack from HBF is basically coming from the midfield for half the game anyway because the field is so short... also they've been very successful with that model AND the coaching staff I'm sure know a hell of a lot more about football and the bodies at their disposal than I do).

Effectively, to get over Schneider getting the boot we need somebody to step and kick 50 goals (on top of their effort for last year) or 25 goals and 25 assists. I don't see any of the neo-blood brothers (Bird, White, Barlow, Jack, Schmidt) being able to do that yet.
I diagress, perhaps the scheinder-shoes will be harder to fill than expected unless somebody like Nick Davis can kick an extra 25 to 50 goals this season!Comment

I had Moore down for 3 goals and 2 assists on Saturday. I'm not suggesting that this will happen every week, but a pretty reasonable start one would think.
I reckon you guys are nuts stressing over Schneider, he's gone - forget him.Pay peanuts get monkeysComment

yep. with you here ORB. Doesn't matter what he does now (and I wish him all the best), he's no longer a Swan. We need to build a bridge, and after seeing Moore on Saturday, he may well be our bridge.Comment

Bloody oath its a serious suggestion,in all the soccer leagues around the world this happens and i dont see why it couldnt in the AFL.Originally posted by Dr DiabolicalIs that meant to be a serious suggestion?
Stell your right its a bloody long post but its good. What you were saying with the goal's/assists i think we can make up the 25+ goals/25+ asists in the form of Mattner/Kennelly/Hall/Micky/ROK and Davo.
Dont forget Hall was down last year and Davo was missing for a while. On the SCG Mattner will kick the ball from the back line into the F50 no problems and if its to a target theres 1 assist straight away.
On losing Schneider i was dissapointed but we can cover him no problem with a few of the senior players stepping up and the younger guys. Now this is a thread that i would expect on the ego -centric, wank session that is redandwhiteonline.com...

Spot on ORB,Moore can do the job and a few other players as a matter of fact its not as if Schneider got 3 goals and 2 assists every week any way.
It seems like some on here think we will end up bottom because Schneider's gone,i dont think so.Now this is a thread that i would expect on the ego -centric, wank session that is redandwhiteonline.com...

Keep in mind that for at least half the season the team (simplistically Mattner) will already be attempting to make up for the numbers missing from Malceski; the eski contributed a 14/26 season- he was next best after the 5 I included.Stell your right its a bloody long post but its good. What you were saying with the goal's/assists i think we can make up the 25+ goals/25+ asists in the form of Mattner/Kennelly/Hall/Micky/ROK and Davo.

By all reports Moore was stellar on the weekend, which is fantastic. Obviously performing consistently during the regular season is very different to a stand out performance in a pre-season game.
I'm not suggesting at all that Schneider leaving has pre-determined our season, all I am suggesting is that I don't believe it was the wisest body to remove from the list; for all I know it was the only offer we received and they were obliged to turn numbers over. The kid did more than just scored goals on occasion, he counterbalanced some of the Swans players who are defensive before the first bounce.I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline

Stell i'm not saying Mattner carry the entire load but he will take up a bit of slack.
Melcho will be very hard to replace as he is our best player(IMOO).
Goodes is a very distant second.

He really failed in the opportunity that was presented to him. He simply failed to take the opportunity presented by the retirement of Paul Williams. We have desperately missed the fast, long kicking, skillful, out side midfielder. It was Schnieder's for the taking. He simply lacked the application, aerobic capacity, fitness and ticker to become that type of player. We have lacked that player. Hopefully one of the young uns will develop into what we lack. Schnieder had four seasons to develop and didn't. He simply wanted to stay the small goal sneak. Sorry don't need that. Au revoirBy all reports Moore was stellar on the weekend, which is fantastic. Obviously performing consistently during the regular season is very different to a stand out performance in a pre-season game.
