Accessing the Grounds

Just noticing some comments re Car Parking at TD.

I started a Grounds page on the wiki, which contains some useful info and tips.

I've only done the 2 Melbourne Grounds, but feel free to update the others, as I haven't been there or atleast not for 20 years. Think about it from the point of view of someone from interstate,what might help them get to and from the ground easier.

Dome Parking:

there is a car park right behind the Colonial Hotel (corner of King and Lonsdale) with access from Bourke St, or Lonsdale St. $8.00 for the night. Closes at 11PM. A 5-10 min walk to the Ground.

I was out of the carpark by 9:45pm on Sat Nite. (And yes, I stayed till the end of the game)

I can't speak highly enough about parking at Randwick racecourse on SCG game days. Not only is the parking free, the old blokes directing traffic are really helpful. When there are night games on they keep a bunch of spots available for women on their own so as their cars are under lights. The bus costs $5.20 return to the ground and it takes little time to get back there after the game is finished. I can be out of the ground, on the bus to the race course and out of the parking area within half an hour - unlike the Moore park rubbish pile that you pay $20 to park on and it takes an age to exit.

Anyway - give it a go!

The only reason we parked under the Dome was that we scored free tickets to the Medallion Club which included parking.

Scott's option sounds much better.

And I agree Wardy, the Racecourse option for the SCG is a winner.

As for ANZ Stadium we normally get the bus from The Shire. Not bad.

saturday night we parked on Lonsdale Street. Stayed for about 10 minutes talking to friends after the game. Leisurely stroll (5 - 10 mins) back to the car, watching all of the poor suckers trying to get out of the underground car park. Out of the CBD in about 5 more minutes.

I can't speak highly enough of public transport to the two Sydney venues.

But for those who do want to drive and are willing to park and walk a bit, there is free parking available as an altenative to Wardy's suggestion of Randwick race course. Indeed, if you just cross over the road from the race course and walk a few minutes up Allison Road you come to Darley Road. Drive past the Randwick TAFE, turn right at the roundabout and there is a heap of free on-street parking available all along Darley Road. You're right alongside Centenniel Park, and it's a pleasant and easy 10-15 stroll through the park to the Lang Road exit and then another 5 or so minutes to the SCG.

Probably only works for the afternoon games, as the Park will be shut by the time the night games end. But even then, it's a 5 minutes (and less than $2) bus trip on the no 339 from outside the SCG to wherever you've left your car.

And for those who don't want to walk that far and get to Sunday games early (ie 9.30 ish, in time for the reserves), you can normally find an unrestricted parking spot not far up Lang Road, also alongside the Park (but on the other side). Depending on how far up you park, it's probably a 5-10 minute walk from there to the ground.

I typically park on Oxford St Paddington now....short walk down to Moore Park Rd and down the Paddington Hill into the ground. For night games the ltime-limited parking ends at 6pm and no restrictions for Sundays there. It's that tiny bit further to walk than the street parking between Moore Park Rd and Oxford St, but no restrictions.

The SCG is the worst ground in history to get out of when full,and any way a bus always picks me up after the game and drops me off at my hotel.

No argument that its a nightmare to get out of - that is why I get the shuttle bus from out the front back to the Racecourse - it is a thousand times quicker than parking across the road or at the football stadium - and cheaper.

Wardy, it's all 'horses for courses', pardon the pun, but with a car full as I always have, the Racecourse option is not necessarily the best for me. By the time we buy bus tickets for a car full, it is barely cheaper and takes 30-45 minutes longer to get there.

Getting there for the 2's bouncedown, you must wait for a bus, sometimes a while because the shuttles aren't running that early. Getting there at that time it justs becomes easier to park at the ground and put up with the long wait at the end of the game.

Travelling alone or maybe a twosome, it's probably a no-brainer if you want to rock up an hour before the main game and get out quickly.

Liz, I was under the impression that those parking spots that wrap around the park opposite the end of Driver Ave from the Centennial Park gates had something like a 4hr limit on Sundays, no good if you get there for the start of the 2's? If you are talking about somewhere else, I'd be interested, although a longish walk with cooler bags full of drinks, lunch and snacks for a tribe of kids is not appealing either.

On the side street just off Lang Road (where you drive over the cobbled bit past the park gates) I think do have limited parking. But if you keep doing up Lang Road round the corner and head up the hill, I am pretty sure it's all unrestricted parking. I can't remember if I parked there last season but I know I did the year before.

It comes down to luck as to how far up the hill you have to drive though. The parking spots are in little clumps of laybys. If you get one in the first layby its really not far to walk at all, but sometimes you have to head up a bit further.

Actually you can get any bus going down Allison Rd prior to the shuttle arriving - whilst the shuttle stops out the front of the the ground - the normal buses stop on the bus only access road - you get off and walk across the oval (about 150 yeards). I just find it easier getting away from the racecourse - after waiting 2 hours to get out a few too many nights (whilst parked in the dust pile) I decided on the semi final night in 05 to park at the race course - and have done ever since. The old blokes know me now and give me a top spot. But as you say horses for courses!
