Not been able to get on here since coming back from Brisbane. So will give a picture of what things felt like rather than who did well etc etc.
Was kinda flat up there. Lowest crowd at the Gabba I can recall. Felt really kinda flat all night. I think us being constantly ahead of the Lions gave the locals scant hope of getting their hopes up too much. Which is of course a reverse compliment to how hard our fellas dived in & how physically we dominated the locals.
Craig Bolton should be given a knighthood for his efforts. How a guy so much smaller than his opponent can be so dominant over a player who has been dubbed "the best in the league" shows you how important & underestimated he really is to our defence. Bugger Goodesy & Kirky. I reckon Bolts should be made sole captain, as he leads by example every time he plays. (Plus he decked Riewoldt, so he gets brownie points from me)
The young pups again are noticeable by the amount of enthusiasm they have brought to the team. I was surprised by what I saw in Tasmania. There was a real steel in the resolve of the young fellas. Surprisingly we have retained this youthful vigour in all our matches this season, even if there were a few cobwebs against the defensively-obsessed Sainters. It is extremely pleasing to see that it is guys like Kieran Jack & Jarrod Moore are playing not only with confidence but are really starting to express themselves out there. Those wonderful goals he kicked on Saturday night are a sign of a player who A) knows the coach is behind him & won't drop him for stuff-ups & B)is confident in trying things & is not going for the safe option.
There definitely is some sort of mental connection between Swans & Lions fans. Be it because of what we both went through in the Edelsten/Skase years, be it because of the Melbourne connections of both clubs, be it because we are fans of not just a team but a sport. We just have too much in common & are very much kindred spirits, even if we hadn't planned to be. Rivalry round, no. Our hated rivals are the Illeagles & Pies. Brisbane, no they're all right. I even had the temerity to drop the flags off at the Lions Office on Friday so I could have a wander around town before coming back to pole the thing later that evening. With any other club you may get raised eyebrows & a couple of smart alec comments. With the Lions you get respect & help without even asking. The weird thing is, you expect things to be like that even before you get there. The trip up to the Lions Club Offices were worth it anyway. The walls at reception were filled with awesome collages of what has happened in every year since the new club was 'formed'. I wanted to stay & have a look at everything but felt a bit funny hanging around with the receptionist looking at me kinda funny.
Frustratingly Saturday night was wrecked for me due to nothing to do with the football. I got to meet heaps of mega enthusiastic new people from the Gold Coast & Brisbane. They are starting a new Gold Coast Supporters Club which will meet at a pub somewhere to watch every match. Apparently they had 80 people together to watch the Port game last week.We had over 300 people at the pre-match function & the Melbourne office sold heaps & heaps of merchandise. It was really good to meet new people who loved the team. I met people who had travelled from as far as Coffs Harbour & Townsville just to support the team. You tend to get a real sense of excitement in such people. They are often clambering like little kids to do things as mundane as helping pack-up the flags ater the game or come out on the banner. It makes going to the footy fun, as you feed off their fervour.
BUT, many of them were seated with me in the Cheer Squad behind the goal. Many wanted to drink. Many were turfed out of our area by security. Many left their seats behind me never to return. I didn't react horribly well to it all, as guess who everyone goes to when they have a problem! I just wanted to get chants going & to get behind the team. And was a bit hurt that people obviously deemed having a drink more important than sitting in a prime spot with other Swans fanatics supporting the team together.
The Qld Supporters Clubs are only new & these are just teething problems. But even though people like me know what the go is re sitting in cheer squad seating, many don't. The thing is I need people behind the goals to help out with waving the flags & getting chants going. And would be frustrated in finding out that enthusiastic people wanting to sit elsewhere due to a technicality they had no say in & were unaware of.
Still I had a cool time in the sun & recommend Brisbane as an away trip to anyone wanting something different to the normal Melbourne footy experience.

I also went up for the game and agree wholeheartedly with everything you said about the Lions fans, they are a joy to sit amongst. I'm lucky and have good travel connections so I manage to get to most interstate games for not a lot of money and have found the Lions fans the most reasonable and responsible. This week was a last minute decision so we had to buy our tickets through Ticketek and our seats were smack bang in the middle of Lions members - hardly another Swans fan in site. They did seem to sense early on that they weren't going to win and were extremely gracious throughout.
One thing that really stuck out was that there was no Goodes booing. After the events of last week and after the article by Leigh Matthews, I expected a few boos early on, but at least were I was seated, there were none.Comment
