Nick Smith is playing on Saturday, fair effort for a bloke who wasn't even coming to Sydney even after he got drafted. Paul Roos had a chat and soon after he was coming.

Is there slight and don't expect too much on debut, although he will show some flashes.

Be interesting to see where Roos plays him. Hopefully on either a HBF, Wing or HFF. Most likely a HFF so he isn't too worried about his opponent but his own game.

Does this mean that the close-to-universally expected return of Davo is not going to happen? Or is he coming in for someone else?

And do you know why he wasn't initially keen to come to Sydney?

North Melbourne where very keen on him and I think he had his heart set on remaining in Melbourne. Is a very smart kid as well and i don't think football meant as much as it did to some of the other kids. Think he just didn't consider going to Sydney.

Not sure on Davo, but i am almost completely sure on Smith playing.

Don't agree with his selection. Slightness is definitely one concern, but he also did not stand out against Belconnen until the last quarter where I suspect the tiredness of the Magpies played a big part. He wasn't in the best list which I believe the reserves coaching staff have input into. Puzzling to say the least?

if he plays it's a joke,the cats will smash him.he just dosen't seem ready to be in.this is one of the problems with the ressies playing in a soft comp,yes this year will be tougher but davis has to come in before smith.

He was very good in the practice game against Belconnen though.

There was a small paragraph in one of the Hall articles which mentioned that Davis was sick leading up to the Belconnon game, and as a result he had to play more in the forward line than planned. As a result, he couldn't work on the chasing and pressuring that he has been omitted for. Maybe the coaching staff feels he needs another week?

Either that or it's Bird's turn to get a proper run-out in the magoos.

No reason to believe Davis won't come in as well as Smith. Roos has said he would give 4-5 rounds for certain players to improve their disposal. Bevan hasn't done that. Drop him for Smith, Brennan for White, and Hall for Davis.

I think there will be two changes - I wouldn't be surprised if we put an extra midfielder in there to cover the Geelong attack - not sure if they'll drop Brennan or someone else to cover that.

The commentators were saying on Triple M the other day that it wasn't the kicking goals that's the problem with Davo, it's the off-the-ball stuff that coaching staff wanted him to improve with. So maybe they wanted to give him another week in reserves (along with the being sick part) to recuperate for the Roos match.

How do you know already?

For first game players. parents are given flights and a ticket to the game.

While they won't need the flights, one would suggest they have been given tickets and told to cancel all other things on Saturday to see their son play his first game.

Most youngsters playing their first game are told well in advance to get their heads around it.

His strength is his weakness, which is a position I'd prefer we weren't in.

Skinny left-footed kid, can play in the midfield but I think he won't spend much time there if at all on Saturday. He may be brought in as a defensive half-forward.

And no, I think his bandwagon is empty.

IMHO

He plays in the midfield. Killed them out of the centre in the final quarter on Saturday. Has good skills, particularly with the hands .

However......

Still has a bit to go to get his body physically ready to make an impact in the middle at seniors level and does tend to drift in and out of games, even at ACTFL standard. I have to admit I'm a bit shocked if he does play this weekend, but good luck to him.

Don't expect too much.
