If we had farted around to get some other player off there would have been even greater reason to punish us further, possibly the loss of points. The longer time might also have resulted in Jesse White (as the 19th man) getting involved in the play
It would be harder to argue that it was an innocent error if you do not correct it straight awayRed and white till I dieComment

Given the way the game was played and the controversy in the last few minutes for both sides it is a real shame that they dont meet each other again this season (once Edwards' leg is fixed.) Can't wait for the return bout in 2009.Comment

I really don't understand what everyone is harping on about in here. Having 19men on the field is illegal. Whether it was intentional or not, or whether the Kangas called for a head count or not, or whether the AFL were too harsh or not are just moot points. This error could have had diabolical consequences as we were in the wrong.
The Swans made a mistake.
Whether or not the AFL were too harsh is not a moot point.
It is a very relevant point given past occurrences of the same thing that resulted in much less harsh penalties.
These 'diabolical consequences' you speak of happen in every game on the field caused by the umpires.
As a general rule, I see all the crap posted here about the AFL being biased and useless as just that - crap.
But that doesn't mean that they are unable to make a bad call, and here, I would say that a bad call was made.
15K would have been more appropriate.

As illegal as it may be, the rules state that the opposition captain must call for a head count. The rule is stupid, but valid.

Interestingly, Dr Peter Larkins said on TFS last night that he had seen on a couple of occasions when our guys ran onto the field prior to the interchange player coming off. He indicated that Brent Harvey went to come off and went straight back on without being interchanged, but (I forget who he said it was) ran back on to tag Harvey before another Swans player came off. He reckons there was a 20 sceond period where we had 19 players on the field other than the White / Jolly situation.Comment

North and the likes of Brayshaw can get stuffed!! They should have won that game against us last week but they didnt. Despite playing badly we still managed to get some points WITHOUT any assistance from the 19th player.Occupational hazards:

The 50m penalties were the thing that stood out. And as the commentators said, in a game like that they were even more valuable than normal.
The one against Davis was probably reasonable - he hung on a bit too long.
The one against O'Loughlin was rubbish. One of the ones against Jude was pretty harsh and I can't remember the other one against him.
In contrast, Buchanan was awarded a free for a headhigh tackle and his opponent remained on top of him with his legs wrapped around Buchanan's neck, arguing the toss about the free with the umpire. It was the most blatant 50m incident of them all, yet Monty got nothing.Comment
