Best game by far by the Bird.Good for his confidence.Did he have an opponent, couldn't see one.I had to smile while watching the replay as Craig Bird is the first AFL player I have seen smile when he gets the ball.Good on the kid.He should hold his place now!!!!!

Not sure why some are calling for his head. This guy is is 18 and is holding his place, which is quite a feat, especially when P. Roos is your coach.. The more time he spends on the field the better as far as I am concerned. Huge talent.
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

EDIT: I note that he had 61% game time so pro rata that to 100% game time and he is up to 28 possessions. He had a few clangers but that's what happens when you are getting contested footy out of packs.

I don't think it's a case of calling for his head so much as looking at the players in the twos who might be expected to feature in Roos' plans, and then looking at who else currently in the senior team looks vulnerable. It's also a recognition that even seasoned players say 22 weeks can be a long season, and for someone to step straight out of U18 football and be expected to play the Swans' style of football all season long is overly optimistic.

Fair enough, although I think kids vary in their capacity to handle the bigtime and not become fatigued. I sense Bird is getting better, not worse, so I don't see the point (yet) of giving him a rest. Agree that should his form taper off, then a break to the reserves is warranted.

Let's not get to carried away... I think we've already seen that Roos will keep you in the team regardless of performance.... And keep you out too if your surnmae happens to be Davis....

Form prior to this year was that he will keep you in the team on credits if you are over 23 years, but if you are under 23 years, you might get a few games in before being sent packing to Canberra.

                Seems to have changed.

Go and have a look at that play with a minute or so to go.

Everyone is exhausted, it's wet, its' slippery and the game's become meaningless.

The ball is sliding round near the boundary line just inside the 50, he comes through, picks it up smartly and cleanly and with one clever kick puts it back to the top of the square.

A few more fumbles from others and McVeigh goals.

                  It was instinctive, clean football.

I raised my 10th beer to that one. Keep him there.

how are people thinking on bird now.

I would say the month since the last post in here we have seen a lot of improvement in his game.

I think he could snag a rising star nomination on current form, if we ever win again.

He will be tearing up the competition after a few preseasons in him.

Looks very composed in traffic, however needs to work on disposal when he ISN'T under pressure, can butcher a few passes sometimes.

                      Very exciting prospect.

P.S. Seems MUCH more used to the pace of AFL footy now

Yes if dreamteam stats are anything to go by he has had a couple of nearly-hundreds in the last few weeks. He just needs to do something special though to get a rising star nomination. 2-3 goals and 25 odd posessions against freo should do it.

Agree with everything there, especially about the disposal. When he is under pressure and forced to react instinctively, that's when he uses the ball best. However, when he has plenty of time, he seems to think too much about what could go wrong, and doesn't back himself. I've noticed that whenever his kicks go astray, they almost invariably fall short, rather than traveling wide or high. To me, that says that he's holding back, worried about screwing up. When he's kicking under pressure, he actually lays into the ball, and it travels like a bullet. Next year, when he's a second year player and has first year players to boss around and such, and takes a more senior role, I reckon his confidence, and therefore disposal will improve.
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!

He is growing with each game.
Finding the ball more and more often, without dominating. Yet.

Just on his DT performance, I have had him in for Gaz the last 3 weeks, and have been pleasantly surprised by the return.

Also, on his performance a good comparison is Trent Cotchin, both similar sort of players, Cotchin probably rated by most in a higher class, I reckon Bird has been consistently better than him as a whole.

Will be interesting to monitor their 2nd years in comparison as Cotchin will probably have a better start than the injured one this year.

I'm a fan - I do note that he still has the puppy fat on his body, will need some hard time in the off season in the gym. If he can get really fit (send him to crouchy's for the off season) look out.
