Tony Shaw and Liam Pickering

No commentator is going to be completely unbiased or objective, that much is obvious. But Wallsy is pretty close to the mark. Analytically, he is without peer in my opinion.

The main beef I have with him is his voice. The inflexions or lack of and the pitch produce a whining tone that cuts right through me like a bandsaw. Cometti has lower ,more rounded and smoother tones that are more calming. Walls is no fool etc but his voice!!!!
Listening to Kevin Bartlett yesterday, which I haven't done for ages,he has a high little thin voice but he manages to keep the whining tone out of it and to me still sounds like an excited lover of football. His voice could be terrible but it is saved by his attitude...Walls' is not.

The main ball by ball commentator yesterday with Pickering and the unspeakable Shaw is a bloke called Casey. His constant references to term number 1,term number 2 drive me crazy. Also refers to goal number one, goal number 2 etc. Combined with the idiocy and verbal diarrhoea of Shaw, it drove me to turn the sound off.

Yeah, I can't take Casey seriously knowing that he has come from an NBL calling background...I almost expect him to start saying the players have a shot from 'outside the paint' or 'downtown'...!

Haven't watched the game yet, but just generally, Shaw is turning into another Robert Walls. And I'm surprised Pickers is being mentioned; I've always found him to be a decent commentator. Not fantastic, but certainly not bad, and I've never really noticed any bias on his part before towards any side.

Well have a squizz at the replay because I reckon Pickering was at best as bad as Shaw. I don't normally bother about the commentators but Pickering never gives us a rap and rarely tips us. On radio it is clear he doesn't rate us.

Anthony Hudson does a good job in the objectivity stakes. Listen to his commentary in the 2005 QF you wouldn't have known he was a Cats fan.

FWIW I listened to the ABC commentary yesterday which was OK apart from them getting our players mixed up. Kept calling Moore Buchanan and vice versa.

I had to turn the sound down on the telly, the commentary was so one-eyed. You would have thought that Port was the only team playing yesterday, if you listened to those two jokers.

For biased commentating, I think the 5AA guys come pretty close. Had the radio on yesterday coz had to take Mum to the airport and listened to the last few minutes of the game. ABC in Perth took in the 5AA call. Everything with those guys was Port this Port that.
What made me laugh was when young Schmidt (I think it was) who had a shot at goal to put Swans 6 pts up. The commentators...er...Port supporters I should say, were saying any score could win it, "but he could miss everything and then Port can score a goal!!"
Next comment was a disappointed sounding "Oh." I actually thought he had missed the shot but then they said, "He's kicked the goal." Dead silence.
I thought I could hear them cry when McVeigh sealed it!!!

At least essentially those guys were broadcasting for a South Australian audience.

Reviewing the last 3 minutes of the game, here's a selection of the bias television commentary.

Luke Ablett makes an attempted tackle on a fallen Troy Chaplin for Port. Chaplin has falling down whilst attempting the gather the ball on the ground. The replay shows Ablett making no or extremely slight contact with Chaplin. Shaw's comment:
"He's out on his feet. I think the umpire was again blind sighted... That's a fee kick every day of the week"

Later, McVeigh back kicks to Micky O. In his attempt to take the mark, Salopek for Port smashes him on the head with his fists. Micky O falls to the ground.
Pickering's comment:
"Oh well done Salopek".

Walls is to AFL commentating what Chappell is to the cricket. Walls' comments consist of either inane, overcomplicated bull@@@@ which bears no significant relevance to the game, stating the complete and utter obvious, or complaining about flooding (usually against the Swans). Add to that his tone of voice and delivery, and he is by far and away the worst commentator in the game.

Someone correct me here but did I hear Casey say that Mcveigh was found "naked" inside 50 (It was the 1st Qtr I believe). No wonder McVeigh played well, no Port player wanted to "tackle" him. (pun Intended)

Im glad it wasnt only me who thought yesterdays commentary was absolutely pathetic! Was unbelievably biased I thought, but made it even sweeter to get the victory in the end. We were the better team imo over the 4 quarters and deserved the points, but if you had listened to the commentators then Port shoudl of won by 15+ goals they were that awesome.

Well You asked for it..

Walls is a @@@@wit. He might not be biased (Though I think he is somewhat), but the way he changes his mind in the course of a game is apalling. At one stage he'll be saying a team needs to "play on at all costs", next minute he starts saying they have to "hold the ball and control the tempo".... One minute a player is "out of form and off the pace..." Next thing, they are the "form player of the team and the team can't win without them!!"
