If he is regularly around the club and knows the players/coaching staff well, that could affect his ability to form a criticial opinion about anything to do with the club.

My comments about the stupidity of some comments is on par with ROK and NWBLOODS having a go at those fans who don't feel they need to put the club down. Refer to ROKS thread..the other Jim Main one.

I didn't know that it was common law that you are prohibited from just reading? Maybe thats why i don't participate, b/c it seems if i don't follow what some say here you are attacked. See my efforts today as proof.

As a new site contributor I am sometimes a little taken back at the harsh criticism dealt out at times but I also take such comments with the grain of salt that I feel they deserve. Thats the beauty of these forums , if you dont want to subject yourself to the type of debate that goes on then dont log in.

While the Melbourne based fans are subjected to talk back radio , footy shows and even discussions at the pub, I gotta say that none of this exists on any widespread level in Sydney so sites like this are great to get a feel for how passionate fans are feeling as well as letting your own thoughts, criticisms and happiness be known to other supporters.

They are an outlet for that passion and while the criticisms are sometimes very harsh and a little heart on sleeve type stuff , i enjoy getting some perspectives from other swans supporters who follow a game that many in Melbourne do not seem to understand is still definitely not the monday water cooler conversation (or the pub or the radio) in Sydney.

Where have I had a go at fans who don't knock the club? I think that you see things that other people don't, and miss seeing things that other people do (such as humour).

But it's easy to not be critical when you know more about the comings and goings of the team.
Without knowing which team Jim supports, it's also easy to be critical of passionate supporters coming from an outsider POV.
I know many here are VERY critical of other sites, Freo, WC, Big Footy.
Whatever.
I never complain about that stuff, I just choose not to go there.
In anything Jim has done more damage than good here.
I don't see many people reassessing their opinions, and now he is bringing all 'their stupid opinions' into the limelight more.
What is his motivation?
Probably would have been better to post a thread here and confront those who he sees as being overly critical.
THAT may have resulted in a few people reassessing the way the post, but I don't think that was what he wanted to achieve.
More like he is looking to create a bit of controversy - and that was achieved, here at least.

People often forgot that the internet is more than "its the internet"..that might have been valid 5 years ago but no anymore.

Like it or hate it, people voice their opinions and blog and that kind of thing all over the place.
Myspace was probably in it's infancy 5 years ago.
Blogging was not heard of much.
YouTube probably was about a tenth of what it is now.
Things have developed a lot in the last 5 years, and it's mostly been in the way of personal presentations of information and opinions.

One thing I discussed with Des early on with this site was a "Battlefield" forum.
He was of the opinion that if the forum was properly run, there was no need.
I wasn't that fussed, and it was his baby.
Through the years I think he was right, but in light of Jim Main's comments, perhaps an 'avoidable' place for those who have gripes about the Swans might segregate the negative stuff a bit and have this place appear a bit more 'sunshine, lollypops and rainbows'

Don't know about that one, depends who they are really. If you're talking about someone like Nathan Buckley, then sure I agree. But have a listen to people like David Schwarz and Rohan Smith - absolutely no idea.

Like or hate what they say, they still have the hands on experience to back up their opinions.
We may give their opinions little respect, but their general football knowledge is far beyond that of anyone who hasn't played AFL at the top level you'd have to think.

I was having a listen to Schwarz the other day and he was talking about the Swans. Now, we're all biased to some degree but he was talking genuine rubbish - he couldn't have watched us any more than 3 times this year. Some of the stuff was beyond having an opinion, it was just completely false.

In my opinion, it depends who they are and what they're talking about.

Back to the original topic, I'd have to say that Matthews is really not defended by posters at all here.
Bolton either, until he started to show some form.
And that's the way it should be.
I ask Jim, "are the majority of posters here wrong?"

The fact that Jim raised Crouch, leads me to believe that he hasn't really been frequenting the board too often, as I'd say that no-one here is critical of Crouch, more disappointed and under the assumption that he is done.

It is also funny that he finds criticism of the coach to be extraordinary.
Personally I don't think I've bagged Roos.
I'm one of those who say he has a huge lifeline as he brought us a premiership.
But generally, coaches get bagged more than individual players.
They are held responsible more for the teams performance.
Not everyone cuts Roos slack because he brought us a flag, nor should they if they don't want to.
People support their team differently and have different expectations.
People bagging Roos will go one until he leaves.
The the new coach will cop it.

In fact I have bagged Roos if you want to call it that.
I have been frustrated at times with our game plan and an apparent lack of alternative.
But I am not the only one.
Many media commentators have been voicing the same concerns for years.
In fact media commentators apparently have the divine right to be critical of players, and we the supporters do not.

He is far more 'deserving' of having an opinion about the playing abilities of the Swans, but he just seems to be blanketed by his apparent hatred of the Swans.
Doesn't seem to offer a level headed opinion, so I choose to ignore it.

I am never patronising to other fans. I thought Jim Main's article was a little precious. The point of that thread is that all positive talk, only make happy comments type of stuff, is boring, pointless and not very stimulating. It has nothing to do with fans who only post positive stuff, and everything to do with those who are critical of players and the club from time to time. It's not all about you mate.
