But given that football consumes me during the winter months I just assumed it also consumes anybody who likes to spend ample time online arguing the pros and cons of the Swans and footy in general. Certainly in the top 5 anyway.
I guess I shouldn't have assumed.Driver of the Dan Hannebery bandwagon....all aboard. 4th April 09Comment

I probably didn't explain myself as well as I could have.
I'm like CTS in that if there is nothing else I should be doing I will watch another game of footy, for example, we had a kids party to take my daughter to on saturday, that took priority over watching the footy, when I got home I watched the end of the game in the hope that Collingwood would get done.
When I was a teenager, in winter, footy was all that mattered (and watching netball). Footy still matters (and the Swans in particular) but it isn't my top priority, family, extended family, this forum, work and the like take priority. Next season, with a baby having just arrived, footy (not the Swans) will take one step lower in my list of priorities.

No argument about family.
Work, mmmmm, I am constantly reminded by the Minister for War and Finances that I can organise a swap or time in lieu for the footy but sometimes work prevents me from visiting friends or her family. Funny how that seems to work out.

This is simply inter-state rivalry.
Most people from SA or WA (and SA/WA expats in QLD, NT, ACT & NSW) will be anti-Vic.
After the Crows got done, my (Crows-supporting) old man pulled out the 'hope Swans beat those Vic teams' line. He'd even prefer Port to Vic teams (and THAT'S saying something).
Still, I'd prefer any team that beats Pies & Geelong (tiring of those untouchables).Comment

I'd like to bet that you don't write for the Herald Sun? If you live in Sydney and follow the Swans you eventually tire of the 100% negative take on all things Swans (excluding 2MMM of course). The best things about the past few years they have had to appear impartial but that's all over this year, it seems. Only teams from the TRUE home of football should have any respect apparently.Comment

It's media (and politics) driven and it occurs in each state. Not all of the public gets swept up with the state rivalry. I agree it makes little to no sense.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

I'm happy to be called the Sydney Swans, happy to represent the largest capital city in Australia, and the main reason behind this is that the club still respects the past and the South Melbourne heritage.
We are an interstate team (I'm from Melbourne so I can say that) but there is always alittle bit of South Melbourne in the Sydney Swans.
The Melbourne press hates us, but I don't care.
(btw - anyone watch footy classified last night, bloody hell, Craig Hutchinson hates us! Caro was actually sticking up for us!)

Agree that it makes little sense that people should support teams against the vics but a lot of that sentiment eminates from the constant pro vic commentating and expert opinion that interstaters have to put up with. Watch any of the AFl shows on fox (ie fox footy teams, on the couch) and you see these guys almost wettng their pants at the prospect of all victorian teams in the finals.
As an example I watched a ridiculous piece the other night by Jason Dunstall on I think before the bounce that tried to show that the swans were protected species. He then went on to show about three or four clips from about three years worth of footy (as far back as Goodseys hit on the melbourne player which I thought looked pretty inane on replay). Quite rich coming from a Hawks chief and just shows how these guys shouldnt hold down positions that are in obvious conflict.
I am sure you could drag up the same on any club but the constant bias against the swans and other interstate teams just gets peoples backs up and encourages this sort of feeling in people.Comment

Let's not go through the Syd/Vic crap again. We all follow the Swans and love the club for whatever reason.
I'm a Victorian but just think of each team in the competition as another club and don't really think about what state they come from.
It always amazes me down here around finals time, that all of a sudden people want a Victorian side to win the flag - after hating the other Victorian clubs for the whole year. I don't get it. If we don't win it, I couldn't care less who does - I just want to watch good games.Mr Roos knew what he was doing'
