Big feline there is a kind of sports fan who believe that jockeys don't pull their conveyances, that the Tour De France is a genuine sporting contest and horse trainers don't send their nags out with more gear in them than Joe Cocker. On such trusting souls fortunes have been made. But it seems a bit much for even the most niave amongst us to give a drug cheat two, three, four . . . . (and counting) chances.
Why not Cousins?

What is inevitable, is a waning interest in the swans this year, and into the forseeable future, and the clubs books covered in red ink, particually if our recent run of finals appearances finishes. With the AFL still blindly chasing their dream into western sydney, any extra interest, both on and off the field, is what the swans need. Cousins would , at the very least, supplied plenty of interest, plenty of bums on seats. IMHO the club has been way too righteous and short sighted in this instance. And given the appalling list management over the last year, a huge opportunity has been missed, regardless of whether he is still the player he was.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

As I said before I'm not bothered either way about Cousins but, as you say, he most certainly would have done what Sydney needs more than anything else-put bums on seats.Comment

Forget about our list management this year, he should have been taken regardless.
It's all well and good to post in a Swans forum about the Swans, but without the Cappers, Pluggers, Halls and what should have been the Cousins' there might be no Swans to sook about.
But we didn't get him, so we move on and look to an awesome year anyway. The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.Comment

He had about 6 chances at the eagles! If he couldn't play no one would even mention more chances. "Chances" is a convenient excuse for taking on a guy who doesn't deserve another go when there are other young blokes who miss out and have done all the hard yards clean. The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.Comment

We would have reaped big $$$ just by signing him.

Who goes to the footy to watch a drug addict? I think the Swans will gain more respect and support by not having him represent us. Of course there are those among us who have no scruples and their motto is that everything is acceptable as long as you don't get caught. Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

You're right that it's lame, at least. Everybody has problems, many worse than Cousins. He made the conscious decision to take drugs, he is responsible for the consequences. I have absolutely no sympathy for his situation.Comment

As you rightly said, EVERYONE has problems.
I'm sure you do.
I'm sure you've made mistakes.
I'm sure you've put them behind you.
Yet you don't allow that privilege for Cousins because he is in the limelight/played for West Coast/was targeted by the media/or whatever reason.
I'm not here saying he's the best bloke in the world.
For all I know he's a complete asshole.
But what I see is a guy who @@@@@@ up, SEEMS to have done everything asked of him to rebuild his life and has done it with quite a bit of decorum.
There are two themes to this thread.
1. Whether the Swans shoudl have drafted Cousins - which as I said before is something everyone has an opinion about, but is really a null and void topic.
2. Whether Cousins should be given a second chance.
People who disagree with the latter make me sad, and one day you'll find yourselves in a position of having to forgive and forget a loved one who may have followed in Cousins' footsteps, done something equally upsetting, or maybe even worse. The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.Comment

The club went down that route in the 1980's. If you want to turn the club into a freak show for the entertainment of the voyeurs then perhaps you can suggest Plan B when he hits the wall. Cousins is/WAS a drug addict. It is unclear whether he has beaten his habit. It is the height of irresponsibility to allow a player who may not yet have recovered form an addiction to play professional sport. The integrity of sport depends on the prevention of drugs in sport. Give me one example where a competitor has returned to competition with the question mark that hangs over Cousins? His recent device of body shaving to thwart sampling should set the alarm bells ringing. What we may be watching is another installment in a sporting disgrace and a human tragedy. And you want to sell this as sport or entertainment.Comment
