I have tried to categorise the squad based on where they are, where they will be in a few seasons, not looking too far ahead, i.e 3 years only

Safe for now but gone in a year or so - Kirk, Hall, O'Loughlin, Kennelly

Safe and should be there for 3 years - Goodes, Ryan O'Keefe, C Bolton, Richards, Malceski, McVeigh, Mattner, J Bolton, Jolly

Seemingly safe but need to improve - Buchanan, Ablett, Bevan, Roberts-Thomson, Shaw

On the rise, young and only going to get better - Bird, Jack, Veszpremi, Moore

On the fringe, gone after next year - Barry, Crouch

Almost passed it, make or break after injury - Fosdike

On the fringe, make or break next season - Brabazon, Thornton, Laidlaw, Schmidt, Daniel O'Keefe, White, Faulks, Barlow, Meredith, Smith, O'Dwyer, Playfair, Grundy, Bruce

On the fringe, still in development - Currie, Murphy, Orreal

Totally unknown quantity - Mike Pyke

You can throw a few around a bit, e.g. Malceski could still be on the improve, Bevan had a great year so maybe he doesnt 'need' to improve to hold his place? If Fossy does come back after injury he would be in the safe, 3 more years category. Who knows when Tadhg may go?

Assuming the development players come through (or at least two of them) we need to find 5-ish quality players from the following category within the next season, maybe two

Brabazon, Thornton, Laidlaw, Schmidt, Daniel O'Keefe, White, Faulks, Barlow, Meredith, Smith, O'Dwyer, Playfair, Grundy, Bruce

For various reasons they havent been able to gain or cement a senior place. The Swans have shown alot of faith in them going forward but 2009 could be there last chance to show that they are going to be AFL footballers, who could play 100-200 games
Astute analysis. Let's hope a few of these guys take a step up, or we are in for many a winter of discontent.

Meredith has only had one year on list so probably has an extra year up his sleeve. By all accounts he'll make it too.

Don't think Meredith deserves the "make or break" category. Even if he doesn't get close to senior selection next year, chances are he'll get another year.

Surely he belongs in the same group as Currie et al?

agreed. similar types in their approach and outcomes. but brennan's not the grandson of a rugby league legend.

Well bugger it. I like Brennan, but, well, umm, not surprised. I guess we just couldn't will him over the line. At least we know he tried his hardest, but sometimes wanting is not the same as getting. Good luck kiddo.

what happens to Smith and O'Dwyer

Think they have been on rookie list for 2 years and both elevated 2008.
If they are not promoted and doesnt look like it (at least yet anyway, need more delistings) are they not ineligible for a third yr as rookies.

O'Dwyer was delisted and re-rookied last year. I believe the rule is up to 3 players can stay on the rookie list for a 3rd straight season. (unless they've changed the rules yet again without announcing it)
