There's no problem with people wanting better access to Grand Final tickets at all. That's one of the reasons I think the Grand Final should be sent interstate to Sydney and Perth occasionally. It would allow people in these other states a better chance of seeing the most important game of the year.

I think you missed Wardy's point. With smaller grounds a greater proportion of seats would be reserved to corporate seats, and that defeats the idea that tickets will be easier to get. If the corporations have all the tickets, how do you propose getting some?

thanks gnome - that is what I was going to explain (but got caught in a meeting)- reduced capacity = reduced number of tickets for actual club members.
the fact is that there will always be a larger proportion of the tickets go to the corporate sector for the AFL Grand Final - in fact a GF ticket is the most sought after ticket in the corporate sector. And naturally the AFL makes a motza out of it. They consider that whilst they maintain that competing clubs have roughly 30% of the ticketed capacity(split between the two clubs on a percentage basis depending on how many members each club has) - next a proportion goes to the MCC & AFL members, then non competing clubs get an allocation as well. The rest is made up corporate boxes, travel companys, promoters etc. So if the GF was moved to another ground - such as Subiaco or SCG - actual members of competing clubs would be lucky if there were about 10,000 tickets between them. These are very rough numbers - but the gist of the argument is the MCG has it all, the capacity to cater for all areas, the location and tradition. Why change it just for changes sake.

Try explaining the 'Subiaco would have a great atmosphere' line to a member who misses out on a ticket because the capacity has almost halved. Like me, they couldn't give a rats tossbag, they want to be there.

You're making an assumption that may not be true. And whether or not the proportion of seats reserved for the corporate sector remains the same, it would still be easier for thousands and thousands of locals in Perth or Sydney to get to a local Grand Final than have to go to Melbourne.

I would never advocate the Grand Final be held at the SCG - what a ridiculous idea that would be. The SCG hasn't got what it takes. But there's no reason it couldn't be held at Homebush at some point in the future. After all, Homebush was home to the best Olympics ever.

The competition is made up of 16 teams, not just us. Eagles and Dockers fans would probably welcome the opportunity to see a home Grand Final rather than having to traipse across the country at great expense for the privilege.

Homebush has capacity, but also has shocking turf that the subject of much ink before every Australian Rules game played there. The idea of moveable wings was nice, but it just wrecks the field.

Sure, Perth people would like the Grand Final to be in Perth. I'd like the Playboy Mansion to be next to my house. But that doesn't mean it makes economic, business and just plain common sense for Hugh to move it.

You really dont get it do you? have you ever done ecomonics??? the corporate sector,like it or not, will always get the biggest slice of the pie in any major sporting event.

What is the problem with staging the biggest game of the year at the traditional home of Australian Rules Footy when you consider it just happens to have the stadium with the highest capacity? - it makes sense!

But you said that it should be shared around - so you have to factor in the SCG as a possibility too. So why not have it at Manuka or Aurora - they have just as much right to stage it going by your theory. (geez there would be about 5 members tickets between the two clubs then! )

Did you ever think that those said thousands and thousands of locals you refer to (who you must obviously know personally ) actually see making the trip to Melbourne as part of the experience? I havent met anyone yet who has had a lousy time making the journey south(and this is coming from someone who had a bloody car accident in Carlton '06 GF night!) I still had a great weekend despite the prang and the fact that we lost by a point. We met people in '05 after the game when we were having drinks at the Mecure - they were Port Adelaide fans - they had booked and paid to come to Melbourne at the beginining of the year - they still made the trip from Adelaide despite Port not getting there and they said they wouldn't have missed it for quids.

As for Homebush - it may have held the best Olympic games ever but so what- the Olympics have a completly different fan base and it doesnt necessarily mean that the same venue which hosted an Oympics in Sydney, could host an AFL grandfinal and produce the same atmosphere. Also at Homebush there is nothing to do on the outside of the ground - there is only one pub, you really cant do the meet ups with people at various venues in the area like you can in Melbourne - Homebush just doesnt cut it as far as staging an AFL Grand Final goes!

A normal club game - fine - even then the playing surface is a disgrace because they have to share it with Rugby league and Union so it has to suit all three - with the AFL coming off third best.

Oh and another thing the corporate sector took the biggest chunk of Olympic tickets in Sydney too - I went to about 8 sessions of sports out there and didnt pay for one ticket! And there were thousands and thousands like me there too all on the corporate junket!

Can't say I agree. I've seen AFL played in each state, and have to say I think the most passionate AFL supporters in Australia live in Perth.

1. The Players would all prefer it.
2. The vast majority of fans prefer it.
3. It enables the Afl to make the most amount of money which helps them to pump the huge amount of money they currently do into programmes promoting footy in the non traditional states.
4. It is the best ground to play on (as all players i have ever seen inteviewed all say that there is nothing like playing at the G, let alone in a GF).
5. It is every Afl playing boys dream to play in a GF at the MCG, you never here them say geez id love to play in a GF at Homebush/Subiaco.
6. Its almost every fans dream to experience what happened for us in 2005 and be there at the MCG.
7. Its every boys dream.
8. Its every boys dream.

I reckon if they took a poll of all the current players it would read 100% to keep the GF on the MCG at the current timeslot. As has been said already, who gives a @@@@ about TV and having a national game, its what every young footballer dreams of to run out on THE G on the last sat in sept. That should never be changed.

Well, I might be getting a hiding on here, and maybe the GF will never head west, but something tells me that one day the GF will indeed make an occasional appearance in Sydney. I wouldn't be surprised if it happens.
