    Membership figures

Club gamble costs Swans dearly - realfooty.com.au

According to this report, the Swans had about 30,000 members in 2008, including some membership categories "not recognised by the AFL".

I wonder if that refers to the Homebush-only pass, and maybe the ACT and interstate memberships (excluding Victoria).

Something doesn't add up. The club has indicated selling about 10,000 Homebush passes this year, and having 8,000 members in Victoria. That would leave only 12,000 full-club members in Sydney. That seems very low.

Does anyone know what the real membership figures were this year?

The 3 match passes would not be regarded by the SSFC as members.

As Bear says, I doubt the SA passes would be counted as members even by the club. One of the differences is probably season ticket holders as I don't believe those count as members to the AFL but the club might well consider them quasi-members. That category didn't have voting rights and had no priority access to finals tickets, I think.

In the past....before South relocated, seasons ticket holders were always counted as members.

Sounds a bit stupid to me that seasons ticket holders aren't counted as members, it would be a waste of money me buying any other kind of membership. I don't need the Sydney passes that you get with a full club member and I don't need the Grand Final ticket that you get with the premiership club member, as my cheer squad membership gets me into the Grand Final.

Here's the latest from the AFL on club membership figures...not a peep from us.

I wonder if anyone has an idea how many members did not renew from last year?

Not surprising in my books, our numbers will be poor.

Dont want to knock SYDNEY (NSW) supporters though going what you read on here and the Sydney sporting public its how it always has been.
You only have to see the NRL and its numbers.
Winning culture is what they follow, once its gone so does the support.
Sydney FC ( A League ) is the perfect example right now.
They have stopped winning, and the support stops going.

Membership prices sure will be a major part in this though , I just wish Sydney people would be more LOYAL when the list looks every bit as good as last year and there is no reason we cant be right in the mix again.
Many on here used the redevelopment of the ground as the reason on the dwindling support and attendance last year which is just crap.

Melbourne membership will be around the same mark as always .

Just wish SYDNEY people would hurt more for the club and not just follow the Swans. Always said that, been to heaps of games up there and it seems more a show for many North of the border and more of trench warfare down here.WATCHING and FOLLOWING are 2 different forms of support.

As I said earlier , most on here hurt for the Bloods and will always be there but heaps on here and general Sydney support (non members) are just so fickle when it comes to support of the club.
Its like the Storm down here, if we win Im happy, if we lose I dont give rats.
Much of our support in Sydney is like that, if we are winning they go , if its to wet or cold or losing better stay at home seems to be the go.

I will always find a way to get the funds and be a member like I do when paying every other bloody bill that comes through the door.
I just make getting a membership a priority and its a thing that is something I love and is a reward. Getting your membership is better than the Gas Bill.

Its not a post to get people angry just something that I believe and I think we will have a real huge fall this year which is a shame.
I can only see us having more members than Melbourne ATM.

Poor old Norf. They are spiralling towards oblivion in ever decreasing circles.

As for our membership, I would be staggered if those poorly timed price rises and seating shenanigans did not have some sort of impact on top of loss of 'discretionary' members due to the financial crisis.

As pointed out, the three match super passes are not included in either ticketed or non-tickted figures.

What is included in membership figures which are provided to the AFL and called ticketed members have to provide access to 5 games and I beleive be more than $100 or so dollars in value.

When you see figures for total memberships from clubs that included non-ticketed memberships they are adding categories like interstate membership, supporter memberships where you don't get access to games etc.

Our figures we report not only include the fully ticketed memberships such as Sydney & Melbourne season ticket holders but also the SA, WA and ACT supporter deals and probably things like the kids club memberships they run.

We all harp on about Telstra Stadium about whether it is good for the club etc, but with the current Sydney membership figures it's going to be a god send that we collect significant revenue from the three match super match passes over the next couple of years until we can build on the Sydney membership base.

They are not included in the figures but I hope we sell a boat load of them this year.

With respect I think you just shot yourself in the foot with your comments regarding your own support for the Melbourne storm - so you really shouldnt point the finger at Sydney supporters should you?

Your thoughts that people used the ground construction as an excuse being crap are harsh, if they did so be it - its their perogative - and they dont have to answer to you, or anyone else for that matter, as to whether they attend or not.

Yes its true that Sydney supporters can be fickle - but there are some Victorian clubs that have the same situation in Melbourne - for example notice the turn around with Richmond - their membership numbers were dwindling as they kept coming 9th, now they have Cousins their numbers have shot up in anticipation of them doing better - however, if they dont perform - expect the numbers to drop again. Its the nature of the beast, also people priorities during the course of their lives change - it doesnt mean they love the team any less, things just change, financial situations change - its just the way it is.

There are three of us gals who have sat together at games, in the same formation, for years, but 2 have different things happening in their lives now so have let their membership go this year, they will get to the odd game but thats about it. And the truth is that like me, they didnt enjoy season 2008 much at all and we were all only going to the games so as not to let each other down (which is a mark of great friendship)

I still love the Swans (although this "hurting for them" stuff is a bit much) but all the controversies, the crap within the club, the complete lack of a playing plan "b" formula - all of which they brought upon themselves, made it, for me, a tediously long season.

Whilst I have renewed my membership - I wont be busting a gut to get to every game like I used too - I too have different priorities now - thats life!
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................
