The Rookie Draft Thread

Bruest I'm not worry about because midfielders are midfielder and we have plenty of them, but Klemke was a defender and thats an area we have a lack of depth in going forward into the future.
Oh well why bitch and moan now, the rookie draft is done. Our List for 2009 is locked and we can't go back and change it. People this is your 2009 Sydney Swans......Once was, now elsewhereComment

But that's not it. We have 3 local rookies spots available. If we didn't want to use them, then the draft wopuld have said PASS noy N/A.
Someone's email has gone missing, I reckon."I'll acknowledge there are more talented teams in the competition but I won't acknowledge that there is a better team in the competition" Paul Roos March 2005Comment

I rang the Swans and they confirmed the disappointing news that the N/A should have read PASS.
So either the Swans don't rate Klemke and Breust or they said no.
Sheesh 2008 has been disappointing draft/trade all round, except for our two top picks."I'll acknowledge there are more talented teams in the competition but I won't acknowledge that there is a better team in the competition" Paul Roos March 2005Comment

It may have been salary cap issues, it may have been the fact we are limited by how many listed players we can play in our reserves, but the fact is we have chosen not to take those 3 extra rookie spots.Comment

Maybe this is the cuts in the football department being seen. They may have decided it is easier to cut out on developing local kids than cut back on medical programmes.
Huge, huge shame for NSW kids who don't get much of a look-in outside the scholarship scheme. It is great that the likes of Klemke and Bruest get their chance elsewhere but I reckon the Swans have some moral obligation to put at least a year into some local lads.
Also hugely disappointed that Bruce doesn't get another go. I thought he was terrific this year.Comment

Great - so we have a free hit at a couple of NSW youngsters who were good enough to be selected by other teams and pass up the opportunity to get some more new talent in before the Gold Coast saps the draft pool.
Instead we have 2 blokes on our rooke list who have never played AFL before (no disrespect to Pyke and Coney but they are higher risk prospects)
If finances were an issue than perhaps a few of our highly paid underperformers could have had their contracts re-negotiatedComment

Cant believe we didnt take Klemke.
Watched him last week down at Richmond and he looks ready , big strapping kid who looks a natural born leader and looked comfortable with the Tigers at training and now has gone to Essendon .Think it will be a great get for them, as for going to Richmond it would of wrecked his career being the one they took him instead of Cousins . Imagine the Tiger faithful.
Has done a fair chunk of Richmonds Pre Season and we let him slip instead we go Coney and Pyke who both will never probably in all reality play the game at the highest level .Worrying trend we seem to be heading downEst 1874

There's a simple one-word response to this: pathetic.
Either the other clubs vastly overrate NSW players (which would be a huge change of pace for them), we are utterly unable to persuade anyone to accept a local rookie listing with us, or we're nearly broke (which doesn't really gel with recruiting Canadians from France and sending blokes to Germany for surgery). Maybe there's a fourth possibility: the Swans are selfish and myopic when it comes to developing the game in NSW/ACT.
This article pushes the boundaries for disingenuousness, even by the standards of official club articles. It implies that we didn't have any picks other than those we used.
I've got an idea: cleaning out the position of "manager of player acquisition" should free up plenty enough money to give some local kids a decent go.Comment

From a lot of the reaction you would think that we missed out on drafting the messiah or something. There will always be a few handy players with potential that miss out on being drafted. I agree its disappointing that we missed out on a few NSW talents but this is a business. There's too much whingeing on this site for my liking at the moment.Comment
