Bloody Oath! About time someone mentioned it! After reading all the praise on White's game on here i thought people must've been watching a different game! Tredrea looked like he was 23 again with White chasing him around all day! Don't get me wrong, i as much as everyone else wants him to make it and want him in the side in round 1 but our defensive coach needs to do a lot more work with him cos thats where we need him to play. Grundy looked a lot better when moved down there. Might not be an athlete like White but he knows how to play the game and use his body to advantage. McViegh is a gun and Bird looked like he had plenty of time and cleaner hands than most of the other youngsters! Jack cant kick unfortunately, how many more like that do we need in our 22? Shaw looked really good and will be better with more senior players in the side. I would have liked to see Johnston get a game but oh well. I really hope Currie can play cos poor old Jolly needs help and he'll be long retired before Pyke learns to play the game! Tough but needs to be said!

Went into the Kings Cross Club to watch as my foxtel buddy got something contagous. Craig Davis held court and worked the room well. VEry small mob indeed.

Mocca has always had flashes of brilliance, and I think today his flashes were a bit more settled than previously. More substance. He is after all still only a kid. A big kid. But a kid nonetheless. He has been on my radar for a couple of years. Kirky was on my radar for nearly four before they took him seriously, so.....

So disappointed in Cheese. Its a team game kiddo. And you should know it by now. However, well, umm, I live in hope. Still.

If MODs can make a career of dashing and darting, well why not. They are not all Judes are they.

Speaking of Jude, which I do in hushed tones as I consider him a bit of steel core for this club, and I hold him in great regard, whatawegonna do when he goes?

It was a chance for the kids to make an entrance, and it didn't really come off. So Macca and Peb put on a bit of a leadership show.

Good thing is that Shaw is going to be good for us. He looks better in red than in black, which is a plus, and he is already reading the players around him well - done some homework I would say. good on him.

Sameold sameold really. But, it was a game of AFL with the Swans playing. Happy New Season everyone!

Oh, and Craig has some news about Nick, and it is all positive. That will do for now. Don't want to put the mozza on him.

It's easy to forget that Port were in a grand final only 2 years ago. They're a good side, determined to make amends for their 2008 shocker, and were close to full strength today; while the Swans have plenty still to come back. Pre-season form is a notoriously unreliable indicator, today especially so.

Anyway, I had my camera at the game today. The pics are now online. Enjoy!!!

            Nice pix NL.

Today's game doesn't look so bad on the stats sheet. Swans won a few key ones:

            Centre clearances 31 to 25
            Hitouts 36 to 35 (Jolly got 29)
            Tackles 45 to 42
Contested marks 8 to 7. (Swans lost on marks 63-72, which may say something about the way Port moved the ball.)

Slightly fewer kicks 154 to 156, but far more handballs 152-97, which suggests a lot of buggerising around.
Inside 50s lost 35 to 38 - pointing to backline clangers and the lack of key forwards (we won clangers 42-32).

Not great stats, but not what you'd expect from a ten-goal flogging. There was probably more experimentation going on than we thought. Swans used 26 players vs 22.

Im only going to comment on a few players. Begin essay...

BIRD - In my Dreamteam/Supercoach for a reason. Abit slower than most mids, but his decisions are alot more switched on this season. Excited about his year.

BARLOW - Ive been saying since he debuted, he could be a great athletic CHF, but as everyone has mentioned he is so soft it's painful to watch. Very disappointing that this continues. Great marking ability, great kicking around the field but awful set shots.

WHITE - I'm still undecided, for some reason he appears smug or something? haha. I have to say, he looked very hungry, saw alot of the ball, although he made alot of mistakes, he got stuck into the game. Bulked up abit too. A full season in the seniors could really be a big prospect

SHAW - I agree, that he impressed me more than I was expecting. Great rebound, and excellent disposal - exactly why we picked him up. I mentioned to my Pop at one point he isn't a typical Swans player.

MEREDITH - Only saw a little bit of him, but looked alot more alert than the other youngsters. Could develop into a better seniors player alot quicker than others.

By the way, where was Veszpremi today?

I agree with a lot of what has been written already. Shaw made a very promising start, McVeigh looks to be continuing his rise and a few others gave honest accounts of themselves, notably Bird.

                        Barlow - awful

Jack - tried hard but can't kick

Meredith - nervous but worth sticking with

Grundy - I thought he went ok actually, especially when moved onto Tredrea

White - based on Roos' comments in the paper this morning he won't be playing Round 1. Seemed to go better in the forward line than the back line.

Pyke - Roos reckons he's got the inside running to be the no 2 ruckman!! As expected, he looked completely lost at times but to be fair to him you could see he has some talent.

I thought he did okay on Tredders.

I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

"You'd say Shawy [Rhyce Shaw] in for Tadhg, but then Jesse White was disappointing down back so you probably have to refocus there, and give someone else a chance. The two rucks - Jake Orreal and Mike Pyke - I thought both did well, and I thought [Heath] Grundy did well down back in the second half" - Roos quote in the age.

I didnt see the game (damn you foxtel for going down on saturday night) Looks like you guys all saw a different ruck contest and sounds like White did not impress Roos too much.

If Pyke is our #2 ruckman come round 1 we really will be the laughing stock of opposition supporters! And on White, its only 1 game and while he needs a lot of work i really hope Roos continues to give him a chance to learn how to play full back throughout the next few games. Especially when he has more senior players around him.
